Editorial Reviews

Review

"Popularization can only be too easy . . . . The editors and authors of the papers in this collection set themselves a far more daunting task, that of making ideas understandable without denuding them of any of their meaning. They do not talk down to their audiences, they try to make them participate in some of their experience. And they treat the work of Klein and Bion with respect and integrity: not avoiding what is disturbing and not making superficial or easy what is deep and complex." -- Hanna Segal, from the Foreword

Outstanding for its readability, clinical approach and teaching qualities. - Tavistock Gazette

this is a very worthwhile book that should prove useful to anyone interested in understanding Kleinian practice and theory. This book should also be of interest to American analysts who seek to understand the foundations - and parallel evolution - of concepts and issues which are currently being discussed under the rubric of a purported new relational paradigm for psychoanalysis. - Howard B. Levine, Psychoanal. Q., 62:651-653 (PAQ)

–Hanna Segal, from the Foreword

With a foreword by Hanna Segal and a valuable introduction by the editor, Robin Anderson, this group of nine lectures for the general public given over three days at the Institute of Psycho-Analysis in London provides a useful introduction to Klein and Bion. The authors discuss the usual Klein/Bion topics--projective identification, unconscious phantasy, paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, splitting and the container--in a lucid style with appropriate clinical examples. This small but densely packed book is enthusiastically recommended to those wishing both a useful introduction to and information on the current state of Kleinian thinking.
Psychoanalytic Books

Product Description

The original concepts of Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion have had a profound and continuing effect on the practice of psychoanalysis. The aim of this book is to present some of their most basic ideas as simply as possible to the reader and to show, by clinical example, these ideas at work in contemporary analysis. Individual analysts contribute chapters on child analysis, the concept of unconscious phantasy, projective identification, the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, psychotic thinking, the relation between the container and contained, and the idea of reversible perspective in understanding `as if' personalities. Contributors: Elizabeth Bott Spillius, Irma Brenman Pick, Ronald Britton, Patricia Daniel, Michael Feldman, Edna O'Shaugnessy, Ruth Riesenberg Malcolm.
