Jane Ogden draws upon her psychological research to challenge the powerful money-making industry of the dieting world. She shows how the process of dieting itself sets the dieter up for failure--by making the dieter think about food, dieting means that food is seen as something special, encouraging people to eat more, not less. Fat Chance! shows how, throughout history, fashion--as dictated by men, yet carried out by women--has forced these same women to alter their bodies in order to accentuate the difference between the male and female form. Once women are able to see the underlying reasons they diet, they will be able to free themselves from their obsession with weight, and actually become healthier, thinner people. By helping to understand dieting, the book frees the dieter from the feelings of guilt, self-dislike and failure which are central to the dieter's world.
