This collection of important writings in music education spans 2500 years, from thinkers like Aristotle to institutions like the National Endowment for the Arts. Noted music education historian Mark (emeritus, Towson State Univ.) has compiled excerpts from over 100 philosophers, scholars, administrators, and politicians. Although many of the early selections appeared in Source Readings in Music Education History (1982), a music education staple also edited by Mark, this volume is valuable for its wide variety of new American sources, particularly post-1950. Also unique to this volume is a section organizing the source materials by current educational issues: "Music Education and Society," "Music Education: Mind and Brain," "The School Music Program," and "Advocacy for Music Education." This is an excellent history of music. It could be more complete; however; I found it to be very useful in the music classes, in the Humanities classes, and the Education classes that I teach at the college level.
