Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

ea. vol: Berkley. 1996. c.400p. illus. index. pap. $16.95.REF Compiled by the National Museum & Archive of Lesbian and Gay History (a program of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in New York City), these two companion volumes live up to their billing. Together they comprise over 1000 pages of information on lesbians and gays, featuring historical time lines, lists of notable people, glossaries, quotes, statistics, AIDS coverage and directories as well as cultural, recreational, legal, and religious information. There is some overlap between the two volumes (roughly a third) as the chapters on history, statistics, AIDS, the community, and resource directories, as well as parts of the other sections, contain only slight differences in text, organization, and illustrations. Targeted at the general reader, the information found here is abundant, accurate, well organized, and easy to locate. However, there are a few problems with these volumes. Some of the information?such as awards lists and the material about online resources?is slightly out of date. Both volumes would have benefited from a more consistent editorial policy. The Lesbian Almanac, for instance, vacilates from chapter to chapter between using lesbian as a blanket term and applying the more politically correct terminology lesbian and bisexual. Additionally, one hopes that the many typos found in the uncorrected proofs will be caught during final proofreading. Nevertheless, these volumes are easier to use as a reference tool than Out in All Directions: The Almanac of Gay and Lesbian America, edited by Lynn Witt & others (Warner, 1995), which lacks an index. And they are far more comprehensive and better organized than Strength in Numbers: A Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Resource, edited by Christa Brelin (Visible Ink, 1996). Extremely accessible, comprehensive, and informative resources for, by, and about lesbians and gay men, these companion volumes are recommended for all but the smallest libraries.?Ellen Greenblatt, SUNY-Buffalo

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive resource, September 13, 2009
Though this almanac is a bit out of date at this point, it provides an interesting and comprehensive background about queer issues and notable queer activists/individuals.
