Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Despite its popular macho image, the sport of fly fishing, according to editor Morris, today attracts women in unprecedented numbers. She further points out that women have been fly fishing for centuries; the first essay on the subject was penned by a nun in the ealry 1400s. To redress the lack of more recent literature, Morris has collected here the meditations of 17 women-from writers to full-time sportswomen-on their experiences with this enthralling pastime. For those who don't know a nymph from a Royal Humpy, or a sparkle dun from a black woolly bugger, this collection may not prove the best introduction. But those already initiated in fly fishing practice and lore are bound to find something interesting in this varied assortment. Ranging from the naturalistic to the turgidly symbolic and philosophical, the most successful tales capture something of the fishing experience while many of the contributors address personal issues such as menopause, bereavement and sexual identity, efforts that produce widely mixed results. Product Description
"Many of these writers came to fly fishing in order to defy, or to wow, or to woo a man. But once the River speaks, the man becomes a superfluous distraction and a woman finds herself standing alone, in living water, defying and wowing and wooing the self. This is the moment the fly fisher is born. This beautiful birth is the heartbeat of these stories".--David James Duncan, author of"The River Why" and "The Brothers K". Contributors include Pulitzer Prize winner E. Annie Proulx, author Pam Houston, fly casting champion Joan Salvato Wulff, Lorian Hemingway, LeAnne Schreiber and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written; humor, romance, and why we fish., June 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Different Angle (Paperback)
This book is not just about fly-fishing, nor is it just about women who fly-fish. The authors and editors have put together a wonderful blend of humor, romance, nostalgia, and the reasons we all fly-fish, male or female. The stories describe the intimidation factor of entering a male dominated sport, why they chose to do so, and what they have learned about life from the experience. It chronicles the journey through life with fly-fishing and describes entry later in life to become closer to a man, or other reasons. Reguardless of how long you have been fly-fishing or how experienced you are, this book will expand your horizons and give you a new look at our favorite sport. This is a worthwhile book for any fly-fisher and no library is complete without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From many diffent angles, July 31, 2000
By FlygURL "FlygURL" (Lawrenceville, GA USA) - See all my reviews
The selection of material for this book is varied like the women with whom I fly fish. Many different backgrounds, perspectives and opinions. It was a joy to read about them all. I hope that Holly Morris decides to put together another book like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Funny and Delightful Book of fly-fishing adventures, July 28, 1999
By A Customer
I loved this book. I fished as a young girl and have been inspired to try my talents once again after reading this book of short stories. I found the stories to be humorous, and overall a great summer read!
