Grade 2-4?Arnosky's curiosity about wildlife has once again resulted in a wonderfully enticing book for young naturalists. Just as he did in All about Alligators (Scholastic, 1994), he draws readers in with a life-sized six-page spread?this time depicting a Great-horned Owl. The conversational tone of the text is simple but never condescending, with a logical flow that covers owl biology and behavior while focusing on the species that live in North America. The detailed watercolors will charm even the staunchest fans of nature photography. The display of a dozen owls from different habitats drawn to scale, the insets that describe their eyes or fetuses?these are the illustrations that bring science alive. The owl swooping through a dark forest, its calls haunting the night?these are the paintings that will appeal even at story time. If you're looking for strong photography, pair this with Michael George's Owls (Child's World, 1992). From Arnosky's All About . . . series, this colorfully illustrated book may not tell all, but it includes plenty of information for primary-grade children about the owl's physical features and habits as well as more specific facts about a few American species. For instance, one helpful double-page spread focuses on owls' eyes, using paintings of a great horned owl to illustrate the skull structure, the pupils, the third eyelid, and the head swivel that allows owls to look behind them. Arnosky writes with clarity and a sure sense of what will interest young children. With its well-composed watercolor paintings, this volume will appeal to science-book browsers as well as young students researching the topic. I've used All About Owls in creating lesson plans on the food chain and owls. This book includes easy-to-understand text and wonderful illustrations.

This was a part of a gift all about owls along with a snowy owl adoption, and a disect owl puke experiment. The book was very nicely done and informative.

A Kid's Review

I like that the author showed us almost all the owls. I learned more than I ever knew about owls. I thought that owls in only one country, but this book told me that there are owls in different countries.
