Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3—When the world's top fairy godmother loses her magical powers, her tooth-fairy friend attempts to help her find a new gig: sugarplum fairy, snow fairy—but nothing works for the plump pixie. Then her pal hatches a plan to find a job that is totally necessary for the good of family sleep and harmony—tucking children into bed as a "Goodnight, Sleeptight, Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite Fairy Godmother!" The overlong story, told in the tooth fairy's ditzy and slightly sassy voice, features the usual Palatini puns and wanders lazily along to the conclusion. Ajhar has created distinctive characters, and the full-color spreads are dominated by magenta and blue hues. Older children familiar with fairy godmothers from classic tales may appreciate this fairy's dilemma more than young children do, but it's hard to say if they will care.—Marge Loch-Wouters, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Product Description

"If yours truly, Edith Molarnari, tooth fairy second class, hadn't seen it with my own two peepers, I wouldn't have believed it myself --- Bernice Sparklestein, once the best fairy godmother in the biz, having a bad wand day. A very bad wand day."

Margie Palatini's heartwarmingly hilarious story about helping friends and finding your place in life along the way, and Brian Ajhar's beautifully fun illustrations will have both children and adults giggling out loud.

"Palatini's books appeal to all ages. Her zany plots with funny characters delivering fast-flowing dialogue will engage younger children, while her extensive wordplay will entertain older kids and adults.

Palitini is the queen of puns and alliteration. Read her books aloud and you'll have trouble getting through without laughing yourself. She certainly deserves to be listed alongside Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, Beverly Cleary, Jon Scieska, and other favorite funny authors and illustrators." --Rob Reid, BOOK LINKS, July 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle story of friendship and magic, September 19, 2009
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Margie Palatini's GONE WITH THE WAND receives fun drawings by Brian Ajhar and tells of a fairy godmother put out of business by her success. It's up to Edith the tooth fairy to help Bernice find new magical powers and new meaning in life in this gentle story of friendship and magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gone With the Wand, August 20, 2009
Bernice Sparklestein was one of the best fairy godmothers that the world had ever seen. Everyone knew of her great deeds. Then, something horrible happened. Her wand fizzled and died. Suddenly, the great Bernice Sparklestein was without her magical powers.

Bernice tried to find another job but nothing seemed to fit. Without her magic, Bernice failed miserably. Fortunately, her friend the Tooth Fairy had a plan.

Gone with the Wand is a sweet story. Bernice is filled with such energy. She wants to help so badly and just can't seem to find a way to do so.
