Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Throughout his life, pianist Devin Bryce has harbored a terrifying secret--ghosts of famed composers have an annoying habit of possessing his hands to play their music through him. During one recital, Devin's performance is ruined when the spirit of Valentin Ressu, an avant-garde composer, takes over. The sonata that emerges is "Endnote," an unpublished work stolen from Ressu's stepdaughter, Suzanne Winslow. Suzanne accuses Devin of the theft. Unable to tell her the truth, Devin realizes he must prove his innocence by letting Ressu's ghost play out--through his hands--the cryptic message hidden in the music, a message that begins with "Listen, listen to what I have to say" and ends with an ominous warning to destroy the sonata. Explosive chemistry between Devin and Suzanne enhances their love/hate/distrust relationship as they work together to unravel the code. With too many secondary characters, it's often difficult to keep track of who's who. Still, Nicholas ( Night Vision ) exhibits a fine talent for creating protagonists of great depth and clarity while blending international intrigue and the paranormal with engaging romance. It's a tale destined to live on in the minds of readers long after the last page is turned.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, romance, and music, music, music..., January 28, 2006
By bhr "birdwoman" (Bryn Mawr, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This is the story of Devin, an incredibly classical pianist with "pedestrian" taste (the author obviously believes pomo is the way to go) who has the added talent of being able to channel dead composers. They possess his hands and mind to have their music play again as they would play it (gads, I knew musicians were ego maniacs, but I never thought it was that bad!)

It's also the story of Suzanne, a music scholar, and the step daughter of a po-mo composer. She normally shuns Devin and the type of music he plays.

Then, her dead stepfather possesses Devin during a concert she's attended. In addition, the piece he plays is one never played before, it's also a composition that has recently been stolen from her house.

There's all sorts of intrigue and 20th century politics played out in this story. It's quite good in that arena. I found the romance forced, however. Lots of "hey babe" sex, but no real reason for these two characters to stay together. I think it would have been better without the romance!!
