From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Chubby, unathletic Michael Brown's worst nightmare is becoming a reality. When his mother marries Mr. Jordan, he will not only move and attend a new school, but he will also be "Michael Jordan." Even though he protests the name change, his mother and stepfather feel it is essential to their becoming a family. As the child begins third grade at his new school, his imagined fears are realized. The kids do tease him. Though he fakes an interest in basketball, he uses phony excuses and injuries to get out of playing. In the end, showing great maturity, he gets a lead in the school play and finds a new way to showcase his talents. The simply written text is uplifting. The boy's parents are depicted as supportive and loving. The realistic black-and-white illustrations scattered throughout this chapter book capture the mood and the action of the story. While the reading level is only second or third grade, older reluctant readers, especially sports fans, may enjoy it as well.

From Booklist
Michael's mother is remarrying, and soon Michael will have a new family, a new home, a new dad. Worst of all, though, he's going to have a new name: Michael Brown will be Michael Jordan, and unfortunately, the young Michael Jordan is nothing like the older one. The new Jordan is short and chubby--and he's not into sports. Misleading, even lying to his classmates to diminish the teasing seems to be his only way out, until he comes upon an activity that's really right for him. It's then he realizes he's a bit like his namesake after all. The characters are slight and the message obvious, but chapter-book readers will be drawn to the idea of sharing a famous person's name and find the plot uncomplicated, the black-and-white drawings very nice, and the ending upbeat. An added purchase.
