4.0 out of 5 stars The Séance, January 26, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Seance (Paperback)
The Séance
Joan Lowery Nixon - Mystery

Lauren lives with her aunt Melvamay in a small town in Texas. Lauren's mother died when she was four and was then raised by her aunt. Her father was drafted into the army and was killed in a truck accident. Lauren also shares her house with Sara Martin whose mother sent her away to live in Lauren's town. One day Roberta Campion, a girl who says she can contact the dead, decides to have a séance with ten other girls. Lauren and Sara are two of the ten who get invited. Sara said she would use the séance as a distraction while she sneaks out of town with another man. When they arrive, Roberta turns off the lights and lights a candle. When all is quiet Sara screams out in distress and is never seen again. The next morning she is found dead in a pond that resides in the Thicket. After a period of time another girl from the séance is murdered. Lauren needs to figure out what happened - or she could be next.
Joan Nixon's writing makes you sit on the edge of your at times and thankfully provides sighs of relief at other times. Once you get ten or so pages into the book she makes you not want to stop. Every chapter keeps you asking questions, but those questions are always answered later.
I liked this book because it was very action-packed and provided puzzles you needed to solve. This book does not have a deep meaningful plot. If you like books that are packed with action, keep you on the edge of your seat and make you want to know what happens next, then this is your book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Nixon Book (As Usual), But Not Fast-Paced!..., July 2, 2002
By T (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
"The Seance" by Joan Lowery Nixon was very good. Nixon never fails to bewilder me with her writing talents. Unfortuantely, out of the four books that I've read by Nixon so far, "The Seance" has been my least favorite. The book would be a lot more interesting if it was more fast-paced. Instead, the book drags along, barely keeping you interested, until the last few chapters...

The story is about a group of girls who get together one night and have a seance. They think it's all fun and games until one of the girls, Sara, starts to act very strange and the lamp plug is pulled out. When the lights are turned back on, Sara is missing. To make matters even more strange, both doors are locked, and Sara is found dead the next morning...Lauren is the main character. Sara lived with Lauren and her aunt as a foster child. Everyone thinks that Sara ran off with somebody and told Lauren her plan. And, after another girl is found dead, Lauren starts to suspect that whoever killed Sara is after her, thinking that she knows their identity...Will Lauren be able to figure out who Sara was meeting that night? Or will she be murdered before she can piece together the clues? Find out in "The Seance..."
