About the Author

David DeBatto is a former U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agent and Army instructor that served in Iraq in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his tour in Iraq, David was an instructor in the Army Counterintelligence Agent course. While in Iraq, he functioned as a Team Leader of a Tactical Human Intelligence Team (THT) in the heart of the Sunni Triangle. His team's responsibilities included; tracking down the infamous "55 Playing Card" Iraqi fugitives, searching for WMD as well as high level Ba'ath Party and top Iraqi military leaders. His team's intelligence collection efforts lead to the capture of one of the "55" as well as several Iraqi generals, intelligence operatives and large caches of conventional weapons and top secret documents. He was medically discharged in March of 2004 after twelve years of service as a result of serious injuries suffered during an intelligence gathering mission just outside of Balad, Iraq at a location affectionately nicknamed "Mortarville" by American troops. David developed close working relationships and the trust of several top Iraqi leaders and was able, because of those relationships, to obtain valuable information not readily available to other America officials; military or civilian. He can regularly be seen giving news analysis of events in the Middle East and the Global War on Terrorism on numerous radio and television networks including; FOX NEWS, CNN, NPR MSNBC and others. David is widely quoted as a source for terrorism and national security related stories by several leading news organizations and has written articles for; The American Prospect, Salon, Vanity Fair, The New Standard and Spiegel Television in Germany.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Counterintelligence, but an OK Read, October 14, 2006

After a reasonably good start with CI: Team Red, this one was a disappointment. Yes, it's an OK read, but there's nothing about it that is counterintelligence, or even intelligence. Nice touch of including Jim Chee from the Tony Hillerman novels. But otherwise, it was just another pseudo James Bond style, with some law enforcement and a little Stargate: SG1 thrown in. Doesn't rate the "CI" title.

2.0 out of 5 stars CI Humor, August 31, 2008
By Joe "Dirt" (Everywhere) - See all my reviews
I would equate this book to the seriousness of the tv series '24'. I read it and the first two as a means of entertainment. This is the first time I have publicly spoken out about my attachment to books of this nature ;)

I would read more, but really Dave, bring it back down to earth, your first book was MUCH better.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid thriller, February 1, 2006
After he lost his sister on 9/11, Boston Police Officer Dave DeLuca reenlisted in the army and went to Iraq as a counter intelligence officer where his performance was deemed excellent. After returning with his team to the states, Dave received a promotion to Chief Warrant Officer 2 and leader of "Team Red, a special operations counterintelligence unit. His first assignment is to find Cheryl Escavedo who while working at the underground base in Cheyenne Mountain allegedly stole classified material.

The search leads to the Arizona Desert where Dave and a tribal policeman track Cheryl's footprints until they suddenly end near a sheet of glass-like material. Realizing that he has not been given the whole story he demands his superior officer tell him what is really going on and learns that she probably stole information on Darkstar, a top secret star wars type weapon that mustn't fall into enemy hands. The clues take the team from a cult that believes that a UFO is coming to Mexican drug lords and Cheryl's roommate. Deluca feels that it isn't the woman he's really after; that proves right because someone has taken control of Darkstar and is using it for his purposes that run counter to what it was originally designed for.

C.I. DARK TARGET is a novel that has plenty of action, excitement and James Bond type adventures. The authors clearly prove the point that without accountability the political-military-industrial complex can do what it wants without the public being the wiser. It also means that when things go wrong, the people who work in the shadows are called upon to fix things up or die trying. Readers will look for more capers starring the protagonist and his Team Red.
