Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Former Harlequin author Jordan (The Heart Breaker) writes highly charged erotic historical romances. Her latest--set in 1810 England--opens with a graphic bondage scene, and the thrust of the book is the sexual education of a beautiful but repressed widow. Damien "Lord Sin" Sinclair keeps company with a depraved aristocratic set devoted to carnal pleasures. Lady Vanessa Wyndham falls into his clutches when her scapegrace brother falls afoul of Sin in an incident involving the accidental crippling of Sin's sister. Challenged to cards, the young man loses heavily, and it's up to Lady V to convince Sin not to foreclose. A nasty bargain is struck: she'll become Sin's mistress to pay off the family debt. But ultimately it becomes clear that the notorious nobleman has met his match: "He had tutored her in the arts of love-making, but she had taught him to love." Readers who devour the erotic historicals of Susan Johnson (see above review) will enjoy this, but those turned off by scenes featuring masturbation and ivory dildos may choose to pass. (May)

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS SEDUCTIVE, May 29, 2000
By Desmond Chan (Bishan North Singapore) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Nicole Jordan bounces back full-force with a compelling romantic novel,THE SEDUCTION - a tale of redemption, love and breathtaking sensuality. From her early novels such as THE WARRIOR and THE HEARTBREAKER, Ms. Jordan never fails to convince me that historical romance can be such engaging read with the right chemistry and poignancy. But in THE SEDUCTION, she tests her boundaries with rejuvenating and intelligent dialogues and some erotic imaginative scenes that spices up the story.

Lady Vanessa Wyndham is one amazing character - strong-minded and intelligent, who agrees to redeem his brother by offering her services as a guardian to Lord Damien's sister (Olivia), because her brother, Aubrey has inflicted paralysis on Olivia in a forbidden tryst. Vanessa manages to win the trust and friendship of Olivia and charms Damien with her unique blend of beauty and wit. Damien, being a notorious rake, sought only his pleasure in tempting Vanessa, but never did he realize he would lose his heart as well.

The secondary romance with Aubrey and Olivia is one that miraculously compliments that of Vanessa and Damien - both seeks redemption and understanding in love. There is sensuality in the love scenes especially where Damien and Vanessa agreed on a coaching of love-making. Damien is frightened of his obsession with her, and he understands he is not worthy of her with his past decadent ways.

It is not just steamy sex that gloss up the pages but the mutual understanding and heated chemistry between the two characters that is lacking in many historical romances. Ms. Jordan is a gifted writer who knits many universal values together -the friendship between Olivia and Vanessa, the acceptance and forgiveness shown in Damien's love for Vanessa and his sister. It surpasses the ordinary historical romances with a passionate style. Altogether, this book is a keeper and is one which restores faith and love in cynics like me.

THE SEDUCTION is dazzling, passionate and heart-rendering that will enthrall fans of this talented writer. With a period of absence from the writing scene, she proves she hasn't lost the magical touch.

Welcome back, Nicole Jordan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great writing and lush sensuality distinguish this Regency, May 11, 2000
Beautiful Lady Vanessa Wyndham has not had an easy life. Young Vanessa is forced into a loveless marriage that ends in scandal when her wastrel husband is killed dueling over the favors of a notorious actress. Vanessa is left penniless and returns home to her family. Vanessa's brother, the irresponsible Aubrey, Viscount Rutherford, has created a scandal of his own when he plays a cruel practical joke on Miss Olivia Sinclair that tragically ends with a crippling injury to the innocent girl. And now, Aubrey has lost the Rutherford family estates in a gambling match with Olivia's vengeful brother, noted rake Damien "Lord Sin" Sinclair.

Vanessa is desperate to save the family home for her mother and two younger sisters and appeals to Lord Sinclair to allow the Viscount to repay him rather than forfeit the family home. Coveniently, "Lord Sin" is looking for a mistress and suggests to Vanessa that she work off her brother's debt by becoming his mistress for the summer. Vanessa feels she has no choice but to agree to Damien's offer and travels with him to his country home, under the guise of companion to his crippled sister Olivia. Once at Rosewood, Damien begins a tender seduction of Vanessa that results in the lady's complete capitulation to him.

Well, this is a Regency romance, so Vanessa and Damien find unprecedented sensual bliss in their lovemaking sessions, soon followed by love. But like any good rake, Damien does NOT wish to marry, or even fall in love, and tries by various methods to distance himself from his bewitching mistress. Vanessa tries to break from Damien by suggesting that he teach her how to be a courtesan, so that she can support herself after he tires of their affair. OF course, the path of true love is never smooth, but this is a Regency romance, and true love DOES triumph, after all.

Ms. Jordan is a new discovery for me. I liked this book for the imaginative and sensual love scenes, for the well-written (if predictable) story, and for the wealth of rich supporting characters. I did feel that in some cases the hero and heroine acted out of character, merely to satisfy the story's requirements. However, that is a small flaw in a book that is one of the best written Regency novels that I have read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steamy Romance!, August 17, 2000
Wow! Well what can I say... I believe I just finished reading the sexiest novel ever. THE SEDUCTION is filled with steamy sex scenes, from front to back. Now mind you, I didn't decide to read THE SEDUCTION because of steamy scenes, but because I wanted to read something by Nicole Jordan! And.. you know, this so happens to be her latest book.

Anyway, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed the story. Ms. Jordan has a way to include hot stuff in her story without distracting the reader from the plot. It's a novel where a reader can read, without thinking too much. Basically a book worth to spend time on. I loved her characters. Lady Vanessa had a very strong and caring personality. She took it upon herself to prevent her brother from losing all the family property to Lord Damien by posing as Damien's mistress. With her strengh, it really made her shine throughout the story. Lord Damien, a rake, was able to change for the better with the help of Vanessa. It was quite funny, now that I realize it, that Damien had a wonderful plan to seduce Vanessa, whereas in the end he was the one that ended up being seduced by Vanessa - unintentionally on her part, of course! It was also a pleasure to read about Olivia and Aubrey's relationship and how they got over their conflicts (Olivia is Damien's younger sister, and Aubrey is Vanessa's younger brother). I'm looking forward to THE PASSION - the sequel to THE SEDUCTION.

If you do end up enjoying this story like I did, another book on the similar theme of seduction is SEDUCED BY A SCOUNDREL by BARBARA DAWSON SMITH.
