From Booklist
Lauren Van Horn ventured far from her Utah canyon country roots by becoming an environmental lawyer, but when her sister, Becca, asks her to return to San Rafael to help with a family emergency, she complies. Becca's jealous ex-husband is threatening to take custody of their daughter by accusing Becca of having an affair with Gabe, an old high-school flame who has returned to town to drill for oil. The plan is to have Lauren and Gabe fake a romance. The environmentalist and the oilman should be at odds, but as a teen Lauren had a huge crush on Gabe, and now she finds herself curiously attracted to him. Even with a contemporary setting, Meier's romance has a warm, old-fashioned feel, in part because the first sex scene doesn't appear until page 298 and because so many of the characters come to the realization that relationships and the safety of a child are more important than politics.
