This YA book is set in a world that is a combination of "historical" Middle East and something out of Aladdin. Girls have limited rights and life is difficult for those who life in small desert communities in an era with trains but where guns have more recently replaced swords for warfare. At the same time, Djinni (from which we get the term genie) and other magical creatures still exist in and out of the stories people tell. I thought the setting, with the blend of realism and fantasy, worked really well.

I also liked Amani as a main character. She is the almost stereotypical plucky heroine with sharp-shooting skills, but I liked her. She meets up with Jin, the obligatory mysterious foreign boy, at a shooting contest she needs to win to get the money to leave her dead end town. At first it seems as if this book will go down a path that is getting trite, but the author has some surprises up her sleeve. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't tell you what happens.

Although there is no indication of this book being part of a series, the ending is somewhat abrupt so I would not be surprised to see another book about Amani and Jin.

Book #143 Read in 2015
Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

This was a good young adult/adult fantasy read. Amani is a feisty young lady who recently lost her mother. Her aunt does not like her, her uncle is debating marrying her and her cousin is jealous of her. Amani needs to get away from that house and when a mysterious foreigner, Jin, crosses her path she sees a way to do so. But the way will not be easy, fraught with war, danger and magic. Good characters and excellent writing made this a read that was hard to put down. I highly enjoyed it and think high school students and adult readers would enjoy it. I am wondering if there will be a sequel....I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine in exchange for a honest review.

2016 is going to be the year of the fantasy novels and Rebel of the Sands will be leading the charge! This book is beyond amazing and just everything I love in my fantasy novels! From the characters to the truly incredible world building it just really doesn't get any better than this. Plus you throw in some downright unbelievably creative mythology and well I'm just a fan for life of this author. She knew when to even add the romance! I'm not a romance fan, but man this book had some pretty awesome romancy scenes between certain character and I found myself sighing with love right along with them. That takes talent for an author to make me do that! I can't wait for the next installment!

Oh, yes. Most excellent. Magical Arabian-style creatures, mystery, romance, and a Western shoot-em-up movie overtone! Loved how immersive the world was. Very well developed and fun to read. Enjoyed the romance and friendship between the two main characters, though I wish we'd had a chance to spend more time with them and their friendship (not to discount the romance but it wasn't nearly as well developed as the friendship aspect). MORE, PLEASE!

Rebel of the Sands was a good read. The beginning felt slow, not so much because things aren't happening, but more because the things that happen seem small in comparison to. The second half of the book. Amani and Jin are great characters, lots of fun, and I found myself hoping they would stay together and save the day. A fun read!
