Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Buried deep inside each of us, a fun, flirtatious person is anxious to get out. No longer do you have to be the wallflower at the party, watching others mixing and mingling and meeting that absolutely fabulous person in the corner. In How to Attract Anyone, Anytime, Anyplace, Susan Rabin, a therapist who was a coordinator for Family Living/Sex Education for the New York City Board of Education, elucidates the principles of flirting--from body language to conversation tips to where to meet other singles--and helps to get you on your way to getting out there!

This book is a playful read, although it's not as in-depth as some of the other romance self-help books (such as Leil Lowndes's How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You, which, while covering much of the same material, has a scientific basis at its core and tends to take itself a bit more seriously). Rabin concisely gives you the tools to gain the self-confidence necessary to meet Mr. or Ms. Right. The advice won't help you once you get to that first date, but the detailed explanation of the beginning steps will help you find the person to ask out. And if for reasons unknown, that person turns you down, Rabin also advises on how to deal with "no."

Although a quiz in the beginning is supposed to enable you to determine what type of flirt you are (for example, a self-centered flirt, the analytical flirt, or the pressured flirt), Rabin doesn't spend much time exploring what this means for individuals or how to overcome specific flaws. Instead, How to Attract Anyone, Anytime, Anyplace deals more with generalities: each chapter gives a heart-shaped bulleted list of tips under categories such as "How to Make Your Own Luck" and "Tips from a Master Flirt." The one chapter that does venture into the territory of psychology--"Don't Be Your Own Worst Enemy"--is a bit cursory and unsatisfying. Overall, though, this guide is ideal for the beginner who honestly feels that there's nowhere to go to meet new people and feels utterly hopeless when faced with a stranger. Before you know it, Rabin will help you feel like a flirt extraordinaire! --Jenny Brown

3.0 out of 5 stars Small Book is not Ground Breaking, February 5, 2004
This book is ok. Some might find it useful. I'd say someone new to flirting completely will get more from this book that someone who is looking to improve their flirting skills. Many of the examples Susan Rabin gives are cliche' and outdated. I was shocked at how similar this book was to the information publicly available at http://www.sirc.org/publik/flirt.html from the Social Issues Research Center in Oxford.

1.0 out of 5 stars nothing new, September 25, 1999
By A Customer
If you're totally clueless about interpersonal communication and psychology, you might might find this book to be a decent primer. At age 33, I just didn't learn anything new at all from it.

I found it to be mostly trite common sense, and the endless peppiness and contrived wittiness got on my nerves.

The book is outrageously mistitled. It most certainly will NOT teach you "how to attract anyone, anytime, anyplace"!!! It doesn't even pretend to teach you that. No book could.

I was hoping for more ice breakers and conversation starters. I already know not to stare at a woman's body or stare at somebody across the room too long, not to brag about myself, take an interest in her, be a good listener, etc. The very few conversation starters it did give were pretty lame. I mean, who's going to walk up to somebody and ask "what's an adventure you've had that stands out in your mind?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book, even if you are a little shy., May 9, 1999
By A Customer
This is a great book. I have found that by using some of the techniques, it gives me confidence because I "know" what I am supposed to be doing if I want to flirt with someone. Many of the points in this book are similar to those in "How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You", except this book is not as scientific. I suggest reading this book, go out (anywhere) and start using the techniques to flirt (remembering you are not looking for your wife/husband in everyone you flirt with). It will help eliminate some of the shyness some of us feel when it comes to flirting and using these techniques helps maintain a safe distance for some rejection if all you are looking for in the beginning are a few smiles from that attractive woman (trust me, you can get them.. got two yesterday in about an hour.. those smiles made my day). Then, after applying these techniques, get the book "How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You" and find out how you screwed up on that last date (trust me, I found out how I screwed up with the last 2 girls I was interested in and it became clear how, in one day, I did the things that "turned off" someone that seemed interested just the day before) and how you can use the flirting techniques with more in-depth scientific techniques. These books go together well and are probably the only ones I would think are necessary for becoming educated in relationships and meeting people. There are still barriers that will always be there, like rejection and shyness, but this book and "How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You" provide a "roadmap" for those of us who would like a checklist of things to do (even when it's not always so clear).
