Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dreher (Your Defense Against Cancer), a proponent of the body-mind connection, suggests that adopting traits that are characteristic of healthy people can lead to improved health. He believes the pivotal psychological factor in illness is not stress itself but how we cope with stress. Drawing on research by psychologists and physicians who have explored mind-body relationships, Dreher offers seven key factors that appear to encourage an improved immune system and better health: the ACE Factor (the ability to attend, connect and express); the capacity to confide; hardiness; assertiveness; the power of love; helping others and self-complexity (having many interests). Dreher cites his own freedom from expected colds and flu resulting from his incorporating these traits into his own lifestyle. Although the mind-body connection still draws much skeptical response, readers may be inclined to experiment to see if a change in attitudes will make them feel better and strengthen their own resistance to disease.

From Booklist

Health and medicine writer Dreher promotes "a leap forward in mind-body medicine" that moves beyond stress reduction. He first chronicles the psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) breakthrough constituted by the discovery that brain chemicals in the bloodstream can alter the behavior of immune cells, then details the research of psychologist Gary Schwartz on the healing power of the "ACE factor" --that is, our capacity to Attend, Connect, and Express. Techniques such as meditation, biofeedback, and guided imagery, Dreher says, engender attention; record-keeping of symptoms can facilitate the opportunity to connect bodily manifestations with corresponding levels of being; a clear understanding of objectives can help people recognize symptoms, seek the best available treatment, procure emotional support from friends and family, and express sadness and anger. Tricked out with ACE exercises and case histories, Dreher's book makes a good case for this "harmony of balanced biochemistry." 4.0 out of 5 stars The Immune Power Personality: 7 Traits You Can Develop to St, November 4, 2002
I've always loved this book and have read it a few times. What's cool about this book is that it is so understandable and useful to the everyday person while including ample reference to research supporting the "traits" and the "preventive" strategies suggested. It's also intriguing enough to hold the attention of the average mental health professional. If you have any interest in learning more about the "mind-body" connection and how you can use it to your advantage, check out this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Boon to Health and Well-Being, February 11, 2000
By A Customer
This was a great find. It is a fascinating book about the science of mind-body connection, but also a very practical helpful book with exercises and advice that cut much deeper than most of the mind-body books I've read. The scientists discussed are all intriguing characters. Real science, real info on how to enhance your emotional life and immune system at the same time. I can already tell it is helping me with many issues and health problems associated with my immune system. The 7 Traits for immunity are all right on--I was most intrigued by the work on confiding, assertiveness, and self-complexity. A terrific read.

4.0 out of 5 stars great "pop" review of medical studies to improve your health, February 12, 1999
By A Customer
This is actually a great book. Recent medical discoveries are depicted in lay terms, easy to read and, yes, even groovy. For example, one medical study showed that a 20-minute journal writing exercise, done daily, helped people's immune systems. And Mr. Dreher instructs you how to do it all at home. Following the exercises will help your health, I should think, and certainly your mental help. Fun, but serious; good for inner healing.
