3.0 out of 5 stars Unintentionally hilarious, June 7, 2003
By A Customer
I picked this book up in an airport after a night of being constantly and unsuccessfully hit on by cheesy guys. I laughed the whole way home at the authors suggestions for picking up girls. Most of the techniques he describes remind me of the techniques of the lame dudes my friends and I are constantly brushing off.

Here are some golden nuggets from the book:

If you are hitting on a girl (called "laying your rap") and she doesn't like you, it has nothing to do with you- it is because she "has her switch off" (has a boyfriend, is a lesbian, etc). Uh, ok.

If you see a girl walking, don't stop her and start your "rap". Instead "follow her as she moves" and wait for her to stop. Yeah, there's just something about a dude who follows me around as I'm walking that makes me want to hook up with him!

If a fight breaks between you and some other guy over a girl: "You should view those nights as a fun challenge..."

"A girl usually wil not lie about whether she has a boyfriend. Having a boyfriend is so important to a girl that it takes precedence over about everything else and is not something for her to lie about. If she does lie, she knows it could jinx her relationship with the boyfriend". Ha! Come on now, we all know girls lie all the time about having a boyfriend to get rid of scumbags who are hitting on us.

Here is a sample of opening lines to use (say this stuff out loud for full effect:

"Look at you, all dressed up from work"

"Look at you guys, on a girls' night out"
"Look at you, with your pretty party dress"
"I saw you at the bathroom. Always long lines for the girls"
"I'll buy you any drink you want because tonight is your night"

There is much, much more! Such as a section on how important alcohol is to your "rap". This stuff is priceless. Is there some good advice in here? Sure. But it is common sense, and buried deep among the other nonsense. (I can honestly say that the only good advice that isn't common sense is not dancing. Most guys can't do it without looking lame.) If taken seriously, this book can teach you how to be that drunk, creepy guy at the bar who is hitting on everyone. If you are lucky, you will be able to attract the drunkest, easiest, most desperate and unattractive girls.

The rating system does not really apply for this one. I give it a 4 or 5 for humor and gag-gift appeal; 1 for information. Read it, you will not be sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, October 19, 2005
By Van Wilder (Anytown, USA) - See all my reviews
This book is, overall, worthless. It has some humor in it and some really basic knowledge (dress in clothes that fit you, exercise, eat well, etc.), but when it comes down to the basic approach of meeting women, it's incredibly vague. They call your pitch to a girl a "rap," and they divide the rap into three categories: beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is where you introduce yourself, the middle is where you build rapport and interest, and the end is where you close the deal with her number. These three sections are the most important parts of meeting women, yet they glaze over them in about 5 pages of text. Also this book recommends buying women drinks: this is a no-no, unless she buys you one and you buy her one. Supplicating a woman will not help your game.

In short, this book can be summed up in about a page of bulleted points. There are plenty of other books on the subject that are better and more worth your time.

Don't buy this book: it's worthless.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book is mistitled..., November 8, 2002
By Martian Bachelor (Feminacentric America) - See all my reviews
First, I should probably say I'm not the sort of Neanderthal who hits on girls to dance or for a date. (Hitting girls is wrong, right?) I've recently read several examples from this genre as part of a study. The thing they all have in common is that they first have to seduce you, the reader, into buying them. They do this by promising the fulfillment of a fantasy. This book does that by its title and a picture of a PYT in a low-cut dress on the cover. But when you read the intro you learn the book's definition of "success" is merely talking with a girl long enough to get her phone number! This is not exactly what most people would think is meant by "picking up girls". After that, you have to call and get a date, but the book is very clear that it won't help you with what to do on a date. So the book is really just about meeting and talking to girls -- laying your rap on them, to use the author's jargon.

With that said, the book is pretty typical in describing the work (s**twork some would say) a guy has to do to earn his way to equality with a girl. You have to present an air of confidence and strength, overcome your fear of rejection, read body language, etc. All pretty much common knowledge and beginner's stuff. But I can say the author's no-nonsense approach and sometime novel perspective on the meeting/mating game kept me interested enough to read the entire 130 (overpriced) pages. And I do have to say most of the advice was pretty good for what it was. (There's a sense in which all generalizations are lies...) There are no complicated secret or magic theories here and I think a woman could read it without getting upset. Maybe the best sections were on techniques for using a "wingman" (buddy) in various situations, as well as the general one of keeping things in focus and on track toward the grand goal: finding an unattached girl with her "switch" (that would be her dating switch) ON and getting her phone number.

It probably helps that the author is a TV producer who lives in the city (NYC) which has the most favorable (for guys) girl-to-boy ratio. Others in less favorable circumstances may not be able to pull off the sort of facile attitude presented here. I'll give it 2 1/2 stars and generously round up for that in spite of all the book doesn't have. If you're needing some basic know-how rather than know-what or know-whether the book is a quick read and might be worth a look.
