Developing software and testing within virtual machines provides you with countless advantages in terms of automation, stability, disaster recovery, and overall code quality. With this book as your guide, you get the tools you need to create a fleet of virtual machine images that you can use to build your own secure applications.

Beginning with the basics of virtualization and its place within the development and testing environment, the book then delves into the APIs and provides a deep, example-rich reference to their function and purpose. VMware expert Eric Hammersley shares his vast experience in using VMware in the development process and shows you how you can streamline your own development with the new VMware Server.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, January 28, 2007
The content of this book is great if you're going to automate your VMware Server processes. Eric's introduction for customizing your Virtual Infrastructure with .Net or Perl is the best one available!
But the introduction to the VMware product and the usage of it is missing.
So this book is great for experienced admins and developers but not for beginners.

I found the combination of the "VMware Server and VMware Player" book and the "Professional VMware Server" book very useful for optaining a very good and complete knowledge of VMware Server.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for what it was but somewhat disappointed, November 26, 2007

I bought this book with the intention of learning about the features of the VMWare SDK and Virtual Infrastructure/ESX Servers scriptability/programmability. This book has some good information on programming the rest of VMWare's product line: GSX Server and Workstation, and seems to be targeted more towards the application developer/ISV who is seeking to automate their test/build cycle using VMWare products than the Network Engineer who is using VMWare to virtualize an enterprise's IT Environment. It covers a lot of information that seems out of place in a programming book, such as a chapter on creating a 'gold' image to use as a template for imaging systems, and information on basic VMWare server/workstation setup and configuration. If that is what you are looking for, then this book is for you. If you are trying to use VMWare's product line to virtualize your IT Infrastructure, then keep looking.
