Product Description

Discover how to use ASP.NET to build, deploy, and run 10 distributed Web applications that can target any browser on any device
ASP.NET provides developers with the functionality they need to create enterprise-level Web applications. This book clearly shows them how to use this framework to create the top ten enterprise applications that they will need for their organizations. To build these applications, Smith explains how to combine the functionality of ASP.NET with products and technologies such as VB.NET, C#, ADO.NET, SQL Server 2000, WAP, XML, HTML, JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The projects include an address book application, a contact manager application, advertising manager, online store, and a Web log analyzer
CD-ROM includes the complete source code for the ten projects, additional resource links, corrections, and FAQs.
Companion Web site features a working version of the ten projects built in the book.

From the Back Cover

Improve your ASP.NET know-how by building 10 ready-to-use applications

ASP.NET provides developers with more functionality and flexibility to develop dynamic Web applications while at the same time writing less code. If you’re an ASP developer familiar with ASP.NET and Visual Studio .NET basics but unsure of how to connect all of these technologies to build useful applications, this book provides a unique approach to help you solve this problem.

Centered on ten applications, these projects present complete programs that you can adopt and modify for use in your own organization. With special emphasis on those ASP.NET features that you’ll utilize most often, seasoned ASP developer Eric Smith walks you through the following applications:

  • Project 1: Address Book–Build an ASP.NET application connected to a Microsoft SQL Server database.
  • Project 2: Contact Manager–Build reusable business objects to handle the business logic and validation necessary for most applications.
  • Project 3: Calendar Viewer –Use the date-and-time functions included in .NET to handle all sorts of calendar events, both one-time and recurring.
  • Project 4: Web Log Analyzer–Create applications for Web traffic, build a Windows service to gather logs and import them into SQL Server, and build an ASP.NET application to view the analysis.
  • Project 5: ASP.NET Error Manager –Use Event Log objects to collect errors from your ASP.NET applications in a central location and provide information on what occurred and when.
  • Project 6: Online Store–Build the "classic" online store from start to finish.
  • Projects 7—10: Teamwork Network–Build an online collaboration system that includes project tracking, file sharing, and discussion forums.

The companion CD-ROM contains the complete code for the ten projects and bonus features for Project 10.

The companion Web site contains a working version of each of the ten projects built in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book if you can catch the errors., December 2, 2002
By Michael F. Maddox (Tallahassee, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book provides some very interesting examples of ASP.NET in practical, usable scenarios. Unfortunately, as prior posters have noted, the book is plagued with errors. I generally like the book, and hope that the next printing will correct some of the terrible typos. It's a shame that such a good book has such problems. I would recommend ASP.NET: TIPS, TUTORIALS, AND CODE as an alternative to this book if you're uncomfortable with correcting the author's code.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Projects & Solid Code, November 7, 2004
By Eric J. Lyng "DaytonaCoder" (Daytona Beach, FL USA) - See all my reviews

The projects are hosted on the internet at www.10ProjectsWithASP.net and they work well.
But you better make sure the book you buy has a CD in it because you cannot download the code online. That is extremely bogus in my case because I bought a used book at amazon marketplace and the seller said it was with a CD and that was a lie. smoky mtn books if you are curious who it was.
Otherwise the projects are really useful, real world projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn ASP.NET and VB.NET, April 25, 2002
By R. Shelton (Sterling, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've just worked my way through 2/3rds of the book and I must say that I am both impressed and overwhelmed. Impressed by the fact that the author has such a deep grasp of the .NET classes/framework and overwhelmed by how much I am learning. I am planning to go through the book again, from cover to cover after I finish this itteration, just to try to pick up some of the tidbits that I might have missed. I have gone through "cover-to-cover" 5 books on VB.NET and 3 on ASP.NET, and this one ranks at the top of my list for ASP.NET and should be considered for the more advance VB.NET people as well.

I can honestly say that you don't need to be an expert at VB.NET to get some great things from this book, but if you look closely at the VB.NET code, you will pick up a ton of useful (real-world) information.
