Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Those contemplating establishing an independent business will have to weigh the pros and cons before investing time and money. This work may be an invaluable source of information for them and for established entrepreneurs. Lonier, who consults on the subject, divides the work into four parts: "The Dream" provides guidelines on how to select the right business enterprise and discusses the 12 biggest myths about working solo; "The Decision" reviews how to prepare the business plan, finance the business, and reach customers; "The Details" analyzes day-to-day operations, from buying a personal computer to planning tax strategies; and "The Delight" offers strategies for charting the future of the business. Also helpful, is the appendix, "Solo Resources," which lists books, online services, software, and names and addresses of interest to entrepreneurs. Recommended for public libraries.

From Booklist

Going solo has never been such an attractive workplace option as it is right now. But Lonier is correct in her assertion that unless you're willing to devote heart and soul to building a business, it is better to be employed by someone else. That, plus 11 other myths (e.g., a solo worker has tons of free time), she sets readers straight about in the first chapter. From that point, her advice is couched in David Letterman-like lists: the 10 easiest ways to choose a business, the three most important office elements, seven surefire ways to get the most out of your day, and so on. This kind of numerical itemization certainly makes an easy read, and, to underscore her points, she intersperses words of wisdom from real-life practitioners. A good first reality check for those dazzled by the glamour of "doing their own thing"--and a terrific psychological spur to practicing soloists. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for budding entrepeneurs and then some!, July 4, 1998
By A Customer
WORKING SOLO is great! Budding entrepeneurs take note! Terri Lonier has compiled, written and devoted herself to the new business owner's lack of knowledge of BUSINESS by doing the work of several people at once. If you need resources and help with your vision statement or business plan get WORKING SOLO. All you need is here to be read and digested, then acted upon. She does more by including two appendixes for more resources. And, check out the last chapter: THE FUTURE IS HERE. This is not a magic "solve your life problems by going into business book". It's real, vibrant and helpful. Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic, readable, helpful, and valuable book, April 20, 2000

It's so refreshing to read a business book with real substance. So many books published in the last years introduce or exploit a new buzzword, have three pages of interesting content, and then go on for another 300 pages of filler. As a result, I've become reluctant to read business books published recently.

But 'Working Solo' goes beyond buzzwords. Over the next few years Terri Lonier's book and her ideas will be an extremely valuable resource in efforts of many people searching freedom and financial success with their own home business.

This book is a gem. Going solo--in a company with your home PC--has never been such an attractive workplace option as it is right now. Computers plus communications creating a new fruitfull environment for personal business of every men/women. 'Working Solo' is the perfect guide for the new breed of entrepreneurs who will create the new products, markets, and services for the 21st century.

Thank you for the new path to the personal freedom and success, Terri!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best business plan guide I've seen, February 13, 2006
By Sandra Huntress (South Shore, MA United States) - See all my reviews

Everybody says you must have a business plan, but everything I ever saw on writing one was a little over my head and confusing. Terri WALKS you through the process of writing your business plan. By the time you get done with her process, you're excited to start! She's very clear and down-to-earth, you don't get corporatese language thrown at you. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to the business world, but wants to get started.
