Book Description
Finally, a book that gets past the basics to show how to utilize Linux in the enterprise As the first operating system to seriously take on Windows, Linux is in use at major corporations like Xerox and Kodak, and top-tier vendors like Intel and IBM are helping transform Linux into a viable system for the enterprise market. Now, with this down-to-earth, real-world book, popular Wiley author Stephen Asbury dispels the myths that Linux is a "hacker's" system and provides programmers and developers with 10 enterprise-ready applications. For each application, the book clearly lists all the tools required, discusses exactly what knowledge is assumed, and then demonstrates step- by-step the entire building process.CD-ROM contains complete code for all 10 projects as well as MySQL, Red Hat Linux, and Beowulf software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great excursion into a many enterprise technologies, April 9, 2000
By Manuel A. Ricart "aricart" (Cottage Grove, MN United States) - See all my reviews

This book is great for many reasons. It most notable feature is the breadth and depth of the topics - all of which are important in the modern enterprise. The examples have a substantial amount of "meat" which makes them useful as a starting point for other things. Some of the customized solutions can easily substitute for commercial products. Great Book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tree's died in vain for this "book", February 11, 2005
By Trevor Goodchild (The City of Angels) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book hoping to get some Linux deployment ideas... The description was perfect, "Enterprise Linux at Work: How to build 10 Distributed Applications for Your Organization". However, this book is a disgrace. This book has *nothing* to do with Linux, and nothing to do with distributed applications. All the ideas are java web applications such as an online catalog, web based bug tracking, and an XML database backup utility. Why would you need to do *ANY* of those things, are they distributed, and what do they have to do with Linux? The answer is of course: You don't, they aren't, and they've got nothing to do with Linux. There aren't words strong enough to describe how strongly I recommend against this book. I will *never* buy a book published by wiley again.
