Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Are your kids like powder kegs--and you never know when they're going to "go off?" Have you ever blown it and raged at or hit your child? In Taming the Dragon in Your Child, authors Meg Eastman and Sydney Craft Rozen focus on the hidden shame of many families--rage--and provide excellent advice and tools for understanding anger patterns, learning self-calming techniques, and managing conflict with kids of all ages. The writing and advice is clear and sensible. Warning:Get out your magnifying glass! The type in the mass-market edition is very dense and small. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
Blowups, tantrums, screaming, sarcasm, and stealing are all forms of anger that can threaten and ruin family life. Eastman and Rozen ( Dinosaur Brains , LJ 4/1/89) define the problem and suggest myriad solutions to deal with different kinds of anger in children, from preschoolers to teens. The authors emphasize positive ways to express feelings so that parents can stop the anger cycle. They point out that while fights among siblings are inevitable, physical aggression is never acceptable; in addition, parents should refrain from too much reasoning or moralizing in the midst of battle. This book is well thought-out and full of anecdotes and parent-friendly advice. For large parenting collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, but a distracting format, May 6, 2000
By Stephen Luby (Dhaka, Bangladesh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was useful to address problems of anger in my family. Eastman begins by helping readers understand the pattern of anger in the household, and then offers strategies to control it. Although we did not implement all of her advice, there were many useful suggestions we integrated into our parenting, with a resulting decrease in anger and tantrums. So it was certainly worth the time and money. My major complaint is that I found the organization of the book distracting. Chapters were short, averaging 7 pages with lots of bullets and ideas that were not completely developed. Typically the reader was pointed to later chapters where these themes would be more fully addressed. The book seemed, at times, as if it were a compendium of 28 oral presentations strung together. A more linear form would have made the book shorter, and more efficient. However, the author's goal was not a complete analysis of family anger, but rather a practical guide to help families. At least this structure did help to make clear what chapters could be skipped over as not relevant to our situation. Overall, a useful book.
