Editorial Reviews

Review

"Getting the balance right between being clear about the complex state of scientific understanding of a disorder and being able to translate what we do know into readable and scientifically sound advice for practitioners and parents is a difiicult challenge. Paricia Howlin's book meets the challenge head-on and succeeds admirably..." (Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Vol 5. No.1)

Product Description

This practical guide to the treatment of children with autism and Asperger syndrome commences with a comprehensive review of research into the nature, causes and treatment of these complex conditions. A wide range of therapies are explored and evaluated and advice is given to parents about the issues to consider when seeking treatment for their children. Practical ways of approaching a variety of problems relating to autism and Asperger syndrome are discussed, notably those associated with
  • language impairments
  • social deficits
  • ritualistic and stereotyped behaviours
Outcomes of the various treatments are outlined and a number of informative case studies are incorporated. The book concludes by tackling the crucial need for appropriate educational provision and early help for families. Children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome is an essential guide for practitioners, teachers and carers seeking a comprehensive, unbiased appraisal of these conditions and the numerous therapies available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, December 19, 1998

Really smashing. State-of-the-art, with all the latest useful research, but jargon-free and reader-friendly. Full of indispensable practical tips and sensible advice on controversial issues such as inclusion and "miracle cures". If you're just starting to find out about autism, this would be a great place to start, but people who are already well-read will still find a great deal of new information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse into Asperger Land, January 27, 2000
The author describes so accurately the behavior of the parent with as-yet undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. I was amazed to read in this book that if a parent seems uncooperative or pretending to be stupid, etc. that one should consider that the parent is an individual with an undiagnosed pervasive developmental disorder. She gives lots of practical advice that develops from knowing the individual rather than using a one-size fits all theory. She manages to go beyond the usual explanations of behaviors to give to the normals(those without AS) an idea of what is going on in the mind of those with AS. She also gives a very accurate description of the problems that people at the higher end of the spectrum experience. She seems to know that "milder" forms of autism do not automatically equate with much "milder" difficulties; they are just a different kind of difficulty. This book has been the most positive book I have read about being the parent with high-functioning autism or AS. She did not criticize those parents' weaknesses; instead she advises ways the carers could support the whole family. I would highly recommend this book for any parent that is on the spectrum somewhere and has a child that is on the spectrum also. Then, lend it to the professional(s) who you and your child will be dealing with to help you.
