I have already recorded my impressions of Volume 1 of Thoreau's journals. This second volume is an entirely different matter. Volume 1 offered variety-there was something there for any of Thoreau's fans, no matter what their particular cup of tea. However, this second volume is pretty much nothing but Thoreau taking walk, after walk, after walk,..........Now, if you are drawn to this writer because you enjoy the accounts of his nature excursions, you will be in heaven with this book. For anybody else, I regard it as a waste of money.

Personally, I respond most powerfully to Thoreau as a social critic. He views society, and people, in pretty much the same terms that I do. I also share his sense of priorities, in respect to how he spends his time and how he lives his life. For me, these later entries in his journals contained almost nothing that would justify the purchase.

The only exception is,towards the end, when he erupts over the John Brown affair. I found that part to be of interest. However, I believe that he wrote an essay in which he expressed a great many of these sentiments. It would be much more practical to simply find the essay online.

As I said, if you are into Thoreau because you love to hear him tell of his various exploits in the forest, you will be extremely well served by this book. I cannot overstate how extensive his accounts are of his nature walks. For anyone else, save your money.
