I used to have a copy of this book, but it walked with somebody. Best-Maugard teaches the reader to combine basic marks to make nice drawings of flowers, mountains, animals, and lots of other pretty things.Starting to draw is frustrating because few of start out making wonderful compositions. His method produces immediate results. This book would be great for classes. I consider it more of a design book than a fine art book, but it can cetainly inspire one to go on and produce fine art.I am getting another copy of it because I know there are projects in it for me to further develop my skills. And I started using it eight years ago.

I bought this out-of-print book originally when I was studying Walter Anderson. The basics of his art work is taught in this book. He studied the primitive designs of Greek, Aztec, African, etc. pottery and art and developed a modern approach to old design techniques like the ones taught by Adolfo Best-Maugard. It is a very valuable instruction book for the beginner or the historian. It appears simple but is very detailed in the basic knowledge of design.
