3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not as good as Tierney's others, January 6, 2000
By A Customer
As a fan of Tierney's paper dolls and of '40s movies, I was disappointed by this book. The artwork is beautiful, as always, but some of the likenesses (Gene Tierney and Veronica Lake) were poor, and in the case of one Gene Tierney costume from _Laura_ Tierney gave her both a hairstyle and dress she never wore in the film! I also didn't care for the emphasis on costumes from _Ziegfeld Girl_, and I found some of the selections disappointing: for example, why include more obscure actresses instead of classic stars like Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, Katharine Hepburn, and Merle Oberon? I only hope Tierney comes up with a sequel to this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glamour!, June 13, 2001
I loved this set of paper dolls & was very pleased with the dolls that were in the book - however: I think that Betty Grable should have been included. She was the most opular pin-up star in the 1940s and I think that she should have been in this set. I hope that Mr. Tierney will do a complete book on her, or as the last reviewer suggested, maybe he could do a second set of the 1940s & include Betty Grable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious Forties, April 13, 2005
I loved this collection of paper dolls, and think that the selection of actresses is representative of the decade (although Betty Grable was a glaring omission). Stars like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn had careers that spanned greater periods (so they should be honored by books of their own), whereas most of those featured were more typical of the era. This is especially true of Maria Montez who specialized in the fantasy film genre that was popular during World War II, and Veronica Lake, whose hairstyle was as influential at the time as Princess Diana's was in the eighties.
The portrayals of Hedy Lamarr and Dorothy Lamour were wonderful, but I feel that the quality of illustration for some of the costumes was not of the same standard.
