Editorial Reviews

Review
"I use CURRENT PSYCHOTHERAPIES because I believe that for a course of this type it is important for students to read about the theories in the words of their founders. Current Psychotherapies allows me to come close to that ideal without requiring students to purchase a dozen or more original sources."

Key strengths: "Reputation as this is ’the standard’, thorough and astute, and not trendy."

"…the straightforward language used in the textbook makes it highly accessible to both my undergraduate and graduate students and serves as an excellent introduction to students interested or just beginning training in psychotherapy."

"I like this text, and have used it for several years, because the authors allow noted practitioners to explain their own method in their own words. In that sense the content of this book is ’primary’ not ’secondary’ material."

Product Description
Used in top counseling, psychology, and social work programs, CURRENT PSYCHOTHERAPIES is the ideal resource to not only help you excel in the course, but also to learn, compare, and apply the major systems of psychotherapy in a way that will be meaningful in your own practice. Each contributor is either an originator or a leading proponent of one of the systems, and each presents the basic principles of the system in a clear and straightforward manner, discussing it in the context of the other systems. Theory chapters include a case example that guides you through the problem, evaluation, treatment, and follow-up process. Accompanying CURRENT PSYCHOTHERAPIES is CASE STUDIES IN PSYCHOTHERAPY, each case demonstrates the basic techniques and methods of the theory being illustrated. This edition retains classic case studies by Harold Mosak, Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, Arnold Lazarus, and Peggy Papp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, July 28, 2004
This book gives brief but thorough explanations of the various theories used in clinical practice. This book is dull, at times, but highly useful. A great addition to any knowledge base.

4.0 out of 5 stars The psychotherapy book, December 30, 2002
By Katherine (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
I used this book as a student in my psychotherapy course. I never knew there were so many psychotherapeutic approaches. I was amazed. I enjoyed exploring all these schools analyzed so beautifully in this book. I finally got the chance to see what school of psychotherapy was closer to my needs. I recommend it to all those who have a blurry idea of psychotherapy, like I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the many psychotherapies, January 6, 2005
By Law Enforcement (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This book provides excellent introductions to a variety of psychotherapies, indeed the most popular methods today. There are over 400 different therapies, and as such this book can not cover them all. However, the book does provide adequate detail for an indepth overview of the therapies, and comes highly recommended to beginning students and graduate students alike.
