Editorial Reviews

Review
"Sociology: The Essentials is extremely well written and the explanations are quite clear. It is eye-catching and interesting. The additional materials presented in each chapter are very thought provoking and excellent learning devices for students to deal with individually or for the instructor to use as class exercises or homework assignments. Using diversity is certainly appealing and current. The lucid approach to the theoretical perspectives in each chapter is terrific and much appreciated."

"The text is well written. The concepts are explained in a clear concise way and the examples are relevant, interesting and such that they would/should attract the interest of our students."

"This text has a lively, relaxed style that does not ignore substance, which is probably the greatest asset of the book. Other texts, especially other essentials books, are so fluffy that they don’t cover enough raw information." --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description
SOCIOLOGY: THE ESSENTIALS, Fifth Edition, uses the theme of debunking myths to look behind the facades of everyday life; challenge ready-made, common-sense assumptions; and help students develop critical thinking skills and better understand how society is constructed and sustained. This thorough but streamlined text provides exceptional coverage of diversity, including social factors such as age, religion, sexual orientation, and region of residence, in addition to race, ethnicity, class, and gender. The text employs a reader-friendly presentation and very manageable structure, even while maintaining a strong focus on sociology concepts, methods, and research. The new edition includes coverage of the latest research and current trends and themes, including the impact of technology on sociological topics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sociology expensive and not a good source of information, July 4, 2009
The book is very expensive for a paperback, information is mixed up and terms are not bold print or examples of the word are shown. This is not a great book where you need to find out information because its just not there.Locating words from index and finding them is a hassle because it might be on another page you have to read it word for word.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sociology The Essentials text book, April 30, 2009
I received the book very quickly, which was nice but when I opened the package I found that they had sent me the instructors edition. In the description of the book I was told there may be some tape on it, but I didn't assume it would be to cover all the spots that said "instructors edition" on the book! Kind of a bummer because it will be hard to sell this book back now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of information., January 12, 2009
By A. Bossler (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Used for a Intro Sociology class. We didn't go through every chapter of the book, but in my spare time I have finished the rest of it. There is a lot of information to soak up in here, it takes a considerable amount of time to take notes on all of it. It can be overwhelming in parts, but is well worth the effort. Excellent tables, charts and pictures are given to enhance your understanding.
This book can greatly alter the way you view your world and thoroughly explains all of the major theories on which sociology is built. It also explains how each theory would explain a certain idea; which is a huge advantage.
