Editorial Reviews

Review
In a slick book destined to grace digerati coffee tables around the world, Peter Wildbur and Michael Burke look at the best on graphical design, from software to signage. [Three stars out of four]. -- Time Digital, 2 November 1998 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
The organization and presentation of information is one of the most important but least recognized aspects of the design profession. Whether faced with masses of material, sophisticated sign systems, or making the complex appear simple, designers must make information accessible to everyone. More visible than the work of any other kind of graphic artist, information graphics are all around us--but how do designers arrive at such elegant and useful solutions to complicated problems? Covering a broad spectrum of material, from transportation systems and body-imaging maps to sign systems, from electronics manuals and personal information-manager (PIM) interfaces to three-dimensional rendering, Information Graphics presents an international selection of designs that make cities and businesses function smoothly. The best contemporary work is featured, including designs by such masters as Erik Spiekermann of MetaDesign in Germany, Richard Saul Wurman in the United States, and Hiroyuki Kimura of Tube Graphics in Japan. Each project includes detailed commentary on how the design responded to the client's needs, and why it works. Within each chapter, case studies examine a single project in depth, from the client's initial request to the finished product. Instructive and useful, Information Graphics has become an invaluable source book for students and an essential guide to creating the most successful designs for the professional.

2.0 out of 5 stars put your money elsewhere, February 21, 2001
By reneereader (rockville, md USA) - See all my reviews
At first glance, this book looked exciting. However, once I started to (try to) read it, I found this book, itself, to be poorly designed. Emphasis seemed to be on slick, glossy pages rather than on content--unfortunate, because my initial appraisal had been, "Great! Full color examples". Sadly, it didn't live up to my expectations. There are better books out there. Over all, worth a glance but not a purchase unless you are just building a group library of information graphics books. I also agree with another reviewer who felt that some of the example designs were not very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars useful, but not a classic, June 4, 2000

Helpful, interesting, although not a classic in the same way that, say, Tufte's Envisioning Information is. For every piece of good design in this book, there's another piece which strikes me as quite bad (the Internet map sites in particular suffer from jumbled, cluttered, confusing interfaces). But this book is still a valuable resource for people interested in this kind of stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of good examples, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
An excellent book with lots of nice color photos and diagrams. Shows and talks about examples and solutions for informing travellers, explaining how things work, controlling input, interfacing with the screen, exploring the 3-d interface, and map systems.
