Combines the usefulness of a culture summary with the liveliness of personal vignettes and page after page of exquisite color photographs. -- Natural History

Extraordinarily well done. -- Cond Nast Traveler

Product Description

The fascinating area of Southeast Asia known as the Golden Triangle is home to six culturally distinct peoples--the Karen, Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Akha, and Lisu--who struggle in a hostile environment to maintain the integrity of their beliefs, customs, and way of life against all the pressures of the rapidly changing society around them. Paul and Elaine Lewis spent decades living and working with the tribes of Northern Thailand. The results of their experience and research are gathered in this book, along with more than seven hundred photographs--most of them in color. Here we see not merely the demanding landscape in which these peoples live, but their ceremonies and rituals, their clothing and ornamentation, their houses and villages, and the impressive skills that they exhibit in crafts such as jewelry, textiles, and basketmaking.

By Greg Thaisticks (Bangkok - Thailand) - See all my reviews
This excellent book is a must for anyone interested in the remaining hilltribes of S.E. Asia. Very well researched and photographed. The information on the hilltribe jewelry is the most comprehensive I have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive visual sociocultural history of Hill Tribes, February 4, 2005
By Sakuteiki "sakuteiki" (Grants Pass, OR United States) - See all my reviews
Life transition ceremonies (birth, death, adolescence, marriage), clothing, working implements, personal and abode ornamentation, spiritual rituals detailed. Engaging reading, instructional photos, helpful before and after major travel among Hill Tribe peoples. Descriptions of social customs and beliefs assist understanding of dilemmas outlined in Healing by Heart: Clinical and Ethical Case Stories of Hmong Families and Western Providers by Kathleen A Culhane-Pera. Recommended for the photos alone, with narrative specifics enabling one to visualize the tribal unity. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peoples of the Golden Triangle, September 4, 2009
By Ruth J. Toliver (Denver, Colorado) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a superb book. The photographs are many, covering all aspects of these people's lives. The narrative is arranged magnificently: language, customs, etc., etc.

This book should be in everyone's home, who is interested in the peoples of the Golden Triangle.

By the way, Paul Lewis is my cousin.
