Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Just what is corkscrewing? Major Helen "Prissy" Prescott should know, because she's the one who supposedly invented this infamous sexual act. Helen, who's been mistaken for a notorious Mexican desperado's girlfriend, has a lot on her mind, and figuring out how to corkscrew is the least of her worries. She has been transported back in time to California during the gold rush with Rafael Santiago, the most infuriating, yet sexiest scoundrel the National Guard has ever known. Helen wants Rafe to know that she's in charge, but Rafe's too macho to let a woman boss him around, especially a woman who looks like a Vargas painting come to life and who is far too distracting to take seriously.

Review

Even back in military school Rafe and Helen had crushes on each other. Now, twelve years later, Rafael Santiago has to serve in the National Guard and Helen Prescott is his commanding officer. Their once romantic affection has now become a sexual heat between them. A skydiving mishap, however, soon transports Rafe and Helen, and their attraction, into 1850 California. From bandits, to miners, to gold panning, 1850 holds it's own unique adventures for these two lovers. But when they parachute back to their own time, they must face the most desperate fight of all. The battle to save their love. Sandra Hill's writing is fabulous! Her characters are 'real characters' whose sexual innuendo is so spicy and lively that I couldn't help but laugh and chuckle at their constant repartee! I always look forward to a book by Sandra Hill because I know it will be a great read, and so far she hasn't let me down! Keep 'em coming Sandra! Wildly funny and so sensuously exciting it'll get your juices flowing! Sandra has done it again! Desperado is a winner!Gloria Miller -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another 5 star book from Hill....., October 31, 2000
Helen is a Major in the army and is nicknamed "Prissy" by an old friend named Rafe. Rafe is a Captain in the army and they run into each other after 12 years in California as the paratroopers are about to make a jump. There is an old rivalry between the two and both are secretly attracted to the other. On the plane the bickering soon begins and old anger is spewing forth before you know it. A fluke of nature spirals the two back to 1850 California during the Gold Rush. When they run into Mexican bandits they are mistaken for Angel, the notorious outlaw who has a striking resemblance to Rafe and his mistress Elena, who looks like Helen. You can imagine the scrapes these two get themselves in already. Helen accused of being a prostitute who knows a sexual trick called the "corkscrew" and the men won't leave her alone. Well, the "corkscrew" is the least of her worries as her and rafe finally realize they have gone back 146 years in the past. They must depend on each other for survival and have to learn to put their differences aside to get out of this mess. Sandra Hill makes the situations they find themselves in hilarious to say the least. Rafe is a sexy and caring man who is misjudged by Helen and tries to right himself in her eyes. The things he does for her are heartwarming and will make you stand up and say, "Where are these men in real life?" Hill makes you feel as if you are there during the Gold Rush with Rafe and Helen and seeing the past through their eyes. It was an amazing journey for them, but will their new found life exist beyond the past? This book is well worth the money spent, I am in the process of purchesing all her books. they are all humorous and romantic. By the way, this book is loosely connected with her other book called, "Frankly My Dear...". ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book, February 13, 2003
By Nicole Davis-Torres (Colorado Springs, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This is the first book I've read by Sandra Hill. I love time travel romances, so I decided to give it a go. Right off, I was laughing my head off. The dialogue between the main characters is funny, sensual and gets very EROTIC. Rafe had me blushing with some of the stuff he said to Helen. I did get somewhat annoyed though with their continual arguing though. For the first half of the book, it seems that is all there doing is fighting, with Rafe baiting Helen, and Helen sprouting horns and bossing him around and giving orders. Its gets better though once they confess there love to each other. Then the sex teasing is on the prowl. What I thought was interesting though, was to have not one, but two people from our time travel back together into a totally alien time and see how they fare. At least they had each other. I would recommend this book to a friend who wanted a good laugh and definently wanted to get hot and bothered under the clothes!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Story, September 26, 2000
By Natasha Abed (Johannesburg, South Africa) - See all my reviews
Rafael is the perfect hero - sexy, caring, passionate, with piercing blue eyes - just itching to teach Helen how to "let go" of her inhibitions and explore the passion between them. Helen is...well, let's just say that "prissy" is an apt nickname for her. Helen initially irritated me tremendously, with her misunderstanding of Rafe, as well as her oft-issued "Aaaaargh!". She also had a tendency to pull rank on Rafe, in a situation where her rank meant diddley-squat. In all honesty, she irritated Rafe as well, but he was still attracted to her.

Sandra Hill's trade-mark hot love scenes are present, and I would suggest keeping a pitcher of ice handy. This book was not as great as her others, but I would still recommend it highly. Reason being, that Sandra Hill spoils us with her excellent writing style, and her "not-so-great" is still fantastic.
