From Booklist
Deidre meets Alistair and thinks he's her long-dreamed-of love, now lost to her because she's the abused wife of Brodie Maxwell and must live up to her vows. When Brodie is killed, Deidre takes their daughter and leaves Scotland for Ireland to escape his brother's claims on her. Alistair discovers her and takes her back to Kirallen, the hold from which he was banished a year earlier. Their mutual attraction grows in fits and starts, interrupted by Alistair's determination to destroy various plots against his half-brother, the current laird, and by the arrival of Ronan, Deidre's childhood sweetheart from Ireland. Ultimately, plots are foiled, the childhood lover is sent home, the current laird is left in place, and Deidre and Alistair are married. Unfortunately, the growing attraction between the two protagonists is stalled rather than augmented by the confusing politics of the place, and the secondary characters' motivations seem somewhat contrived.
