Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-- An overview from the time of the Lenape, through exploration, European settlement, and the struggle to gain independence. The opening chapter introduces New Jersey as it exists today. A balanced approach to history is maintained by including the role of women and slaves and by stating various viewpoints of skirmishes between settlers and Native Americans, loyalists and revolutionaries. A direct writing style enlivened with comments on daily life is appropriate for the book's predominant appeal as a research source. However, while most current materials now refer to the Indians of the region as the Lenape, Fradin continues to use the term Lenni-Lenape. Lackluster black-and-white illustrations and maps are not always an asset; on the opening page the text uses Jersey City as a reference point but doesn't place it on the accompanying map. A Colonial America timeline and index are included, and a few rather lengthy biographical sketches are inserted into the chapters. Most younger students will be amply served by the succinct information in New Jersey (Childrens, 1987) by Deborah Kent but those needing comprehensive information about the colonial period will find this book a useful source. --Diane Nunn, Richard E.
