From School Library Journal
All of the important components of a children's biography are here: an attractive layout; good quality, captioned black-and-white photographs; a chronology of important dates in Robinson's life; and an index. The very sparse and simple text takes Robinson from his childhood, through his career in sports and civil rights activities, to his death in 1972. However, due to the limits necessitated by the controlled vocabulary and the length of the book, there is little explanation or analysis of events. If primary-grade children are asking for biographies, this title will fit the bill. Those looking for somewhat meatier biographies on a slightly higher reading level have plenty to choose from, including David Adler's Jackie Robinson: He Was First (Holiday) and Jim O'Connor's Jackie Robinson and the Story of All-Black Baseball (Random, both 1989). --Tom S.
