Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with other books in the On Duty series.

Gr. 4-6. Books in the On Duty series, which are written by individuals who have served in the military, describe in detail the glamorous and not-so-glamorous aspects of life in the army, navy, air force, and marines. Each volume is devoted to a specific program, such as army basic training, and takes readers through the routines and demands in concise, chapter book fashion. Submarine includes a look at exercising and sleeping on the ship; Basic Training lends insight into weapons and fitness training programs; Demolition Expert includes some history along with explanations of demolition work. Each volume has many full-color photographs, a glossary, and a few suggestions for further reading. A useful series for younger or reluctant readers curious about the military. Heather Hepler

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, March 8, 2003
This is not a book for anyone who is actually looking to find out anything about what happens at Army basic training...I purchased this book hoping to get an inside look at basic. The book talked more about making friends and having fun than it did about drills, formations or any of the actual physical training one would encounter. The book is written on a 2nd grade level at best and should not be purchased by anyone who is looking for any kind of pertinent information on the Army whatsoever.

1.0 out of 5 stars A mistake, March 5, 2003
... This is a work that is meant for elementary children and not for anyone actually looking into the military lifestyle. It read more like a leaflet than a book. It was not just short; the book spoke more about making new friends at basic training, than it did any actual training. I can honestly say I did not learn a single fact about the Army, basic training or any other aspect of the military from this book. Unless you are buying it for that 3 year old who is learning to read, do not waste your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking, February 3, 2003
By A Customer
Perhaps I should of observed the price or the number of pages or even read a few pages. Basically, I was utterly disappointed. The book took me about 8 minutes to read from start to end. This book has a reading level of about 8th grade with large font and only gives a very brief insight into basic combat training.
