Editorial Reviews

Review
'There is no doubt that this text will be an enduring and definitive volume on contact mechanics ... The book is a unique introduction to the subject and its many carefully selected references provide the basis for a continuing education.' B. J. Briscoe, Tribology International 'This is the first comprehensive book of its kind and it can be commended both to undergraduates with a particular interest in contact mechanics and to post-graduate workers whose special interests lie in the field of frictional contact, surface deformation and wear.' J. Gittus, International Journal of Structural Mechanics and Materials Science

Product Description
This book describes the stresses and deformations of solid bodies in contact with each other, along curved surfaces that touch initially at a point of contact or along a line. Examples are a railroad track and the wheels running on it, or a pair of meshed gear teeth. The book commences with the development of the theory since the problem was first described in 1882. There is also a discussion of the influence of friction and the topographical roughness of surfaces. An important feature of the book is the treatment of plastic and viscoelastic bodies, and an appreciable section of the book discusses bodies in sliding or rolling contact. The mathematical treatment assumes that users of the book are graduates in engineering; it is a book written by a distinguished engineer for other professionals and their graduate students.

5.0 out of 5 stars great reference, February 8, 2009

if you want to learn about hertz contact. this is THE book.
i found it really interesting.
organization was sort of weird though, when trying to compare the different cases it can be confusing. if you are working on a problem and looking for an appropriate formula, you have to dig around to make sure all the assumptions were right compared to another very similar formula. but, sort of the nature of the topic.
i cant think of a better book on this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Highly Recommended Title, as Entry Level Textbook, February 12, 2008
Excellent review of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian Contact problems. I highly recommend this book for those who are having their first contact with the subject. Grad students will find it useful and clear, but I'm not sure that undergrads will have an easy time handling the book, or the subject, for that matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Introduction to the Field, May 19, 2007
This classic text is an indispensible resource for any engineer concerned with contact mechanics. It is very well-written and covers many phenomena. Some may find portions of the book to be too theoretical or mathematically based. However, the subject is inherently difficult. A watered-down presentation would probably not suffice. If your willing to do the work, the book will reward you with deep insight and understanding into its subject matter.
