Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This reissue of the classic 1932 edition of Lamb's Hydrodynamics is an indication of the lasting value of the work. Constantly in use since its first publication in 1892, this book is the definitive reference work for all fluid dynamicists. The new foreword by Professor R. Caflisch highlights the prominence of this treatise in the field and outlines the development of fluid mechanics that led to its publication. He also resolves possible conflicts with modern notation. Despite the rapid pace of research in modern fluid mechanics study and the advent of high-speed computers, Lamb's work remains a relevant, timeless classic.

THE following investigations proceed on the assumption that the matter with which we deal may be treated as practically continuous and homogeneous in structure; i.e. we assume that the properties of the smallest portions into which we can conceive it to be divided are the same as those of the substance in bulk. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Post-Graduate Fluid Dynamics, July 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hydrodynamics (Paperback)
The first edition of this book was issued, I believe, about a hundred years ago! Nowadays it is not the techniques of fluid dynamics that have changed but the computing power and methodology to solve these inherently complex problems. That said, this book is "The Classic" text on, what are termed, 'Potential Flow' problems. As such it is essential reading for anyone serious about the subject of Fluid Dynamics. After one has learned the fundamental techniches, covered in this book, the solving of these simplified fluid flow problems are simply delightful. The book provides a very good insight into the working of both analytical and computational fluid dynamics.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential reference, June 24, 2002
By Fred Camfield (Vicksburg, MS USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hydrodynamics (Paperback)
The first edition of this book was published in 1879 when Sir Horace Lamb was a much younger person (he was serving as an officer in international associations in the 1920's). It remains a standard classic text in hydrodynamics, covering the fundamentals of the subject. The basic science has not changed, but solutions to problems have become much more advanced as some processes are better understood, and as computational methods become more advanced. The text covers the basic equations of motion, irrotational motion, fluid motion in two dimensions and problems in three dimensions, the motion of solids through a liquid, vortex motion, tidal waves, surface waves, waves of expansion, viscosity, and rotating fluids. It is recommended as a standard reference for hydrodynamics and physical oceanography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic fluid mechanics text, August 17, 2005
By John Pedersen (Eden Prairie, MN USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hydrodynamics (Paperback)
As noted by other reviewers, this is a classic fluid mechanics reference text, but not suitable for detailed explanations or beginners. It also suffers from the usual fluid mechanics problem of notation, and the notation in this book is a little dated. However, once you get used to the "short article" layout (vs chapters) and the notation, you will treasure and use this book a long time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst version ever!
This is a very classical book on the subject of fluid mechanics, and I was very happy to find a hardcover version. But this version is a big disappointment! Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Classical book in theoretical fluid dynamics
This is an encyclopedic collection of the classical results. And the role this book plays in fluid dynamics is just like Carslaw's classical book does in heat conduction area. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique Classic
This book was written in a time when ideas established by men such as Kelvin and Rayleigh were still exciting and new, and it evolved over the decades to remain a classic... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Important reference -- can be very difficult to digest.
This is, of course, a classic text on fluid dynamics. Expect some work to get through it, though. It is very mathematical and not for the feint-hearted.
