Editorial Reviews

Review

"The brevity of treatment is more than compensated for by the author's stimulating presentation." Mark Morford, The Classical Outlook

Product Description

In The Art of Greece and Rome Susan Woodford illuminates the great achievements of classical art and architecture and conveys a sense of the excitement that fired the creative artists of the ancient world. The Greek were quick to challenge time-honored styles and, stimulated by the problems that sometimes emerged from their daring innovations, they invented solutions that have been considered classics ever since. The Romans recognized the Greek achievement and built on it, adding a talent for organization and flair for architectural construction on a huge scale to create an impressive art of their own. Examining all aspects of Greek and Roman visual arts, this edition includes a new chapter on Roman architecture, as well as new illustrations, and updated bibliography and glossary.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Inexpensive Introduction, August 17, 2000
By Patricia L. Brace (Marshall, MN USA) - See all my reviews
Susan Woodford's contribution to the Cambridge Introduction to the History of Art series, Greece and Rome, is a relatively inexpensive introduction to the arts of this period. It covers the main historical style periods of both Classical Greece and Rome, with brief but interesting discussions of sculpture, pottery, painting and architecture. However its brevity is also its weakness. There are only oblique references to the Parthenon and Pantheon, two of the most important buildings in the ancient world, and barely any mention of the earlier Aegeans cultures: Minoan, Mycenaen and Cycladic nor the pre-Empire Villanovans and Etruscans in Italy. This book could work in an Ancient to Modern art history survey course when it isn't possible to go into great depth, but would still need to be supplemented with further information on the cultural, decorative and structural importance of both the Parthenon and Pantheon.
