Review
"Lorrin Koran, M.D., has written a thorough, practical and well-organized book on OCD and related conditions that is aimed squarely at the clinician...I highly recommend Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders in Adults to the clinician in search of practical approaches to OCD and its kindred conditions." Psychiatric Times

"Koran has accomplished a phenomenal state-of-the-art compilation of current knowledge in OCD and related disorders. The author clearly and concisely presents a master's view of diagnosis, psychotherapy and psychopharmocology for a set of common but difficult pathologies. The tone and utility reminds me of the more general, spiral-bound volumes by Schatzberg and Cole that are a benchmark for clinical psychopharmacology. Koran's monograph at least matches, and in many ways surpasses their work, especially in practical discussions of therapy issues. This is very high praise...Finally! A really frank, open guide to managing treatment! No complexity is evaded, bringing out crystalline diagnostic and treatment pearls." Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

Product Description
Written for clinicians, this book presents in detail the diagnosis, clinical picture, pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder and disorders traditionally included in an obsessive-compulsive spectrum. The book draws on the author's extensive experience as well as reviewing the published evidence, including controlled trials, case series, and case reports. Each chapter ends with treatment planning guidelines summarizing appropriate evaluation and treatment strategies. An extended chapter details the use of all medications that have been reported effective for these disorders and the management of common and uncommon drug interactions and side effects. The book's appendices contain useful symptom rating scales, provide access to mental health organizations and to printed and Internet materials for patient education, and list international proprietary names for the drugs discussed. This is an essential resource and practical guide to treatment planning for psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, whether they favor pharmacological or cognitive-behavioral approaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for clinicians to the treatment of OCD., August 17, 1999
By A Customer
In the past ten years the concept of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has changed dramatically from that of a rare and treatment resistant disorder to one of the most prevalent and treatment responsive of all psychiatric disorders. Along with this has been a rapidly expanding body of research and clinical information. Dr. Koran has pulled together the clinical literature and combined it with his considerable personal experience as Director of the OCD Clinic at Stanford to produce a much needed guide for clinicians. Starting with the approach to the patient through diagnostic considerations and treatment (including treatment refractory patients and patients with co-morbid disorders), Dr. Koran presents the management options and strategies and his recommendations which are solidly based on clinical data. The book is by no means dry, but is so well written that it reads like Dr. Koran is talking directly to the reader. This guide comes at just the right time and defines the standard of care for OCD.

5.0 out of 5 stars OCD: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide, March 21, 2000
By T.B. Ghosh, M.D. "rctg" (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
A truly outstanding work by a sage clinician and researcher in the field of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders. The book covers classic OCD, in addition to the related disorders of Tourette's, Hypochondriasis, Trichotillomania (hair pulling), Compulsive buying, Kleptomania, Gambling, and others. This book is a perfect blend of useful clinical tips and academic background. It will be a useful tool for all clinicians, especially psychiatrists and mental health professionals. In addition, it is lucidly written and accessible to sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and their family members.
