Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-- McPhail's plucky porker returns. This time, Pig Pig is looking for spending money and is surprised when his mother suggests that he earn it. A young fellow like Pig Pig quickly conjures up grandiose images of himself as a homebuilder, race-car mechanic, wild-animal trainer, and more. Mother patiently counters each fantastic proposal with a more manageable, less glamorous possibility. Pig Pig finally decides that Mother could hire him. Pig Pig's experience shows how a caring adult can strike a clever balance while gently guiding a young planner back to reality. His mother is a sounding board, never scolding or scorning, but quietly offering alternatives. Pig Pig discovers the best choice from among myriad possibilities and has the pleasure of finding his own success. McPhail's characteristic style is present: large watercolor images highlighted with ink lines and deeper tones for contrast. The youngest listeners may miss the subtlety of Mother Pig's guiding hand, but new readers will appreciate the quiet humor. --Virginia E. Jeschelnig, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars My m3-year-old's current favorite, February 15, 2008
This story is my 3-year-old's current favorite. I'm not sure if it's because he wants money or he likes the idea of a kid having a job. We actually talk about his chores around the house as "pig pig jobs," and he loves it.

1.0 out of 5 stars The opposite of what childhood is about, June 11, 2006
Here's the story, in a nutshell: Pig Pig wants money. Mom says he should work for it. Pig Pig has all sorts of creative, fanciful ideas about what he could do. And one by one, Mom transforms his ideas into mundane housework that serves her. I can work in the circus taking care of the animals! says Pig Pig. Or you can take care of our pets, says Mom. I can fix cars! says Pig Pig. Or you can wash our car, says Mom. That's right, mom, crush that nasty creativity. And see if you can get some free help around the house while you're at it. Yay childhood!
