From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-- Twenty-five rare and unusual breeds of dogs are introduced, including the hairless Xoloitzcuintli, the wrinkled Shar-Pei, and the six-toed Puffin dog. All are purebred, but many of the breeds are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Descriptions of each type of dog include at least one photograph, interesting anecdotes, and information about the breed's development. The Cohens write in a lively style and although they doubt whether readers will ever own one of these dogs, they hope to at least make readers aware of their existence. Black-and-white photographs are of a generally good quality, although a few are not as sharp as they might be. A list of rare breed organizations is appended. A book for dog lovers, particularly those who want to know more about some unusual kinds of dogs. --Carol Kolb Phillips, The Library, East Brunswick, NJ
