Susie and Murphy Foley of Bigfork, Montana, raise and train Newfies and have started a volunteer organization called "Black Paws Search, Rescue & Avalanche Dogs." The care, training, and uniforms for these big, lovable canines are described in Patent's conversational, anecedote-filled narrative. Mu?oz's good-quality, full-color photographs are attractive and informative. Children will enjoy seeing these hard working animals in action.

Patent describes the training and special equipment used by these Newfoundlands, whose keen sense of smell helps them locate peoplewhether they are buried under an avalanche, submerged in water, or simply lost in the woods. She points out that although these animals search instinctively, instruction can greatly enhance their abilities.
