Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
The first Body Shop opened in Brighton, England in 1976, selling cosmetic preparations in bulk and refilling their customers' plastic bottles in an early "green" effort. Now there are over 1000 shops around the world. This book seeks "to underline the commonality of human experience by placing the rituals of skin, hair and body care into various contexts-historical, anthropological, cultural." The result is an entertaining collection of facts, regimens, advice, and lore pertaining to our efforts to beautify ourselves. Mention of the shop's products is unobtrusive; this is not an infomercial. The advice is generally common sense, available elsewhere but very nicely packaged, and the history is fascinating. Recommended for public libraries.
