Gr 5-7-- Dinosaur footprints--what a great topic! And Farlow covers it thoroughly, explaining how scientists estimate the size of a dinosaur from its stride, where dinosaur footprints are found, and how they were preserved. Patricia Lauber covered some of this information in Dinosaurs Walked Here (Bradbury, 1987), but Farlow goes into much more detail. He talks at length about ghost footprints, which are ``undertracks'' or ``overtracks'' made in the sediment above or below the mud layer on which the dinosaur actually walked. Sadly, the illustrations are very uneven. Some are stock pictures that relate only to the text in that they depict dinosaurs. Others, which relate more directly to the topic, are poorly executed. Too bad this deserving text didn't receive the illustrative support it deserves, for unlike so many dinosaur books for children, it contains new information unavailable in other sources. --Cathryn A.
