Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-12. As usual, Gay has really done her homework, the result being this stellar example of an information book--insightful, well researched, and intellectually stimulating. Calling on child development experts for opinions and assembling a host of carefully chosen examples and personal comments, she offers a positive yet realistic look at what it's like growing up with a mixed-race background. Her wide-angle perspective touches on cultural, historical, and political aspects of the subject, ranging from the current controversy surrounding transracial adoptions to racial pigeonholing and the work of activist organizations devoted to supporting and informing multiracial individuals. Gay certainly recognizes the discrimination, but she puts it in balance, emphasizing that race is only a part of what makes an individual "who I am." Positive, supportive, and informative, all rolled into one, the book is marred only by its cramped, unappealing internal design. Directory of interracial support groups; chapter notes; bibliography. 5.0 out of 5 stars Kathlyn Gay has done an excellent job., October 31, 1997
By A Customer
This book is excellently written and covers manys aspects concerning the experiences of the biracial and interracial culture. The books discusses life experiences of adults, childern, and youth as well as the concern for the multiracial category. The author expresses the concerns that biracial and interracial people have regarding thier own personal identity and how society has impacted their lives. A "must read" book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Look At Multiracial Americans, August 27, 1997
By A Customer
This books features short interviews with children and adults, who tell what it is like to grow up as an "other" in the United States and their struggle to be recognized for who they are. I enjoyed this book, but I would recommend a far superior book (also by Kathlyn Gay) called "The Rainbow Effect' which explores multiracial children and their families. However since that book does not seem to be available at Amazon, I do recommend this one as well. Read it, you will learn something
