Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 8-12-A collection of experiments and activities designed to illustrate basic properties of water. Most of the projects utilize readily available equipment and supplies. Directions are clearly presented, and diagrams aid in the construction of apparatus where needed. Safety rules are presented in the introduction; the need for adult supervision and additional precautions appear in bold print. In presenting each of the 36 investigations, Gardner asks questions that focus readers' attention on specific outcomes and suggests further research. In addition, 21 "puzzlers" are scattered throughout the chapters with answers given at the back of the book. This is definitely a hands-on science book, and not one in which directions are followed by descriptions of results that make it unnecessary to do the experiments. Students and teachers looking for challenging activities involving water will find this volume most useful; they will also find ideas for interesting science projects.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. How much of sand is air? How can you empty a glass underwater? Anyone interested in the physical world around them will find this book interesting. The reader will discover the strange properties of water through 36 simple experiments and 21 "puzzlers" presented with clear instructions. Many require only household items; others need small lab equipment. Young scientists can calculate the dew point and relative humidity of the air; investigate the properties of floating and sinking; and learn about evaporation, melting, and the boiling points of water. When possible, Gardner uses common expressions to help explain scientific principles, for instance, descriptions of water that has "skin" and is "sticky" aid in the understanding of the experiments on surface tension. But there is nothing diluted about the scientific concepts--complete with formulas--that are presented. Gardner uses great diagrams and graphs and plenty of black-and-white pictures. He provides a bibliography and the answers to his intriguing "puzzlers" at the back of the book. Susan DeRonne
