Editorial Reviews

Review
"The sentences are clear, short, and concise. The text gives excellent advice and does it in a manner that uplifts a student's desire to use these methods. It does not talk down to the student. I have had many students comment on how well they like the text and how it has improved their study habits. . . . The major strength of the text is that it gives sound advice on how to overcome all of the problems students have when taking a math class."

"The goal of my 25-year teaching career has been to give students the self-confidence and the concrete skills to succeed in math classes. They need to be taught how to learn math as well as to learn the content of math. I will definitely use Mastering Mathematics again."

"I feel the majority of the students we see in developmental courses just don't know how to succeed in math and many feel that they never will. A book like this can be the help students need to turn their failure around."

5.0 out of 5 stars College Math Instructors--Your students need this book., January 29, 1998
By baumgart@uwp.edu (Kenosha, Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This book includes a quiz encouraging students to "come clean" about their study habits in math classes. Then the score on their quiz directs them to specific chapters which offer practical suggestions as to how to become a better math student. Students love it because it brings their study habits up to the level needed to succeed in a math class in a non-confrontational way.

2.0 out of 5 stars lacks in quality content, May 1, 2007
By EliteCod3r "c0d3" (Flagstaff, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
I am majoring in Mathematics. I picked this book up with the intent that it would describe specific and effective ways to study mathematic and would save me time. Instead, it gives very generic tips such as:

-Come to class on time
-Dont miss class
-Take legible notes
-Do homework and use college resources
-Find supplement material

There are a few pages that talked about studying theorems and proofs. All it said was follow every step of a proof and think of what theorems relate to.

This is a good book if you want generic, basic advice like that above. However if you want specific study tips to effectively learn math, keep looking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great information, January 24, 2007
The suggestions for study habits is excellent. I squeaked by with a C in the math course. I would have failed it all together if I hadn't tried so hard. It's not the book's fault I stink at math.
