5.0 out of 5 stars Population by Weeks Review, May 29, 2004
By A Customer
This is a great introduction to demographics. It provides a easy to read introduction. It is still a college textbook. The author integrates humor into the text, which certainly kept me reading. Infotrac was completely worthless. It was a password to a three-month trial of access to databases. I already have access to databases through other sources, school and the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars good readable textbook on theory, September 23, 2009
This is a textbook that is easy to read and covers alot of theory, but nothing complicated.

This is a book on demographic theory, not demographic methods, they are often studied separately.
(A good book methods is Preston's Demography: Measuring and Modeling Population Processes)
It explains the major formulas in an easy way, but you really need a methods book to learn all the practical techniques.

The purpose of this book is to explain the major demographic variables: mortality, fertility, and migration.
It tends to use a historical perspective and uses examples from all over the world.
I thought the book was easy to read and very informative, and it explained the formulas in a non-technical way which helped me understand the methodology better.

Weeks is a genius. He came into my population life course class and spoke about anything we wanted to know, and was happy to be there. Which is weird, coming from the academic world.
