Jessica Young’s “Haggis and Tank Unleashed: All Paws on Deck” is a wonderful book for children who are just learning to read. The characters are appealing and the adventures are fun. Filled with details, James Burks’ cartoon-like illustrations add visual interest to the story; the pictures are cute and colorful.

Simple, short sentences and the use of "easy" words, most having no more than two syllables, are factors that help keep beginning readers from becoming frustrated. Clever word play introduces the concept of homonyms; the back-and-forth between Haggis and Tank reinforces the different meanings of the word pairs.

The dialog between the two characters is contained in “balloons” similar to those in comic strips. Because the conversational aspects of “All Paws on Deck” are more complicated than many beginning readers may be prepared to deal with, this book is better if first read with a parent or grandparent. Doing so allows the child to read the easier portions and the adult to speak the dialog. This also helps the child, who may be unfamiliar with comics, understand the format and to be able to read the book on their own later.

Scholastic Branches series gives readers of any level fun-to-read books of appropriate difficulty. The Haggis and Tank books are exactly what I was seeking to share with my grandson who is just learning to read. It allows him to read while still having Grandma read to him. I have no doubt we will be reading “Haggis and Tank Unleashed: All Paws on Deck” multiple times.

I love this book! I appreciate the author's adult and childish jokes. Young calls the captain of the boat "Captain Scurvy"--scurvy being a disease that historically plagued sailors lacking vitamin C. Young also makes jokes with knots and nots & ayehs and eyes. Kids might not get all the jokes but adults will.

Kids love the underlying story. The two dogs--one that looks like a schnauzer--go on a pirate adventure. Well, the adventure takes place in a back yard--but that's okay. They look for a treasure and even run into a sea serpent. The two silly dogs have an entertaining time together.

I love the pictures. Kids love them too! I also like that the words spoken by each dog are differentiated by different colors. So you don't have to guess which dog speaks. While the story consists of as many pictures as words, it still tells a story. The book--unlike Pokemon--isn't just a bunch of disjointed pictures and quotes. A storyline runs throughout the entire book.

Mature 4 year olds through 8 year olds will enjoy the book. The book is written at approximately a second-grade reading level. However, I wouldn't be surprised if many second graders will need to work to read every single word. So it's a great learning tool. But younger children who can't read the book--and even older children--will enjoy listening to it.

“Haggis and Tank Unleased: All Paws on Deck” is a well-written story by Jessica Young but is an even better illustrated book by James Burks.

Burks’ illustrations are well-drawn and are rich with humor as you find yourself smiling at almost every drawing. Burks’ artistic abilities add greatly to this story, not to take anything away from the writing skills of Young. I simply enjoyed the illustrations much more than the words.

The two main characters, obvious by the title, are Tank who is a Great Dane and Haggis, a Scottie dog. The story is a pirate adventure as the two dogs try to talk like pirates while searching for hidden treasure. The book is specifically written for young readers and in the back of the book offers lessons on a page of word lessons, including an explanation of homophones which are used in the story telling.

Children with an imagination who enjoy pretend play will especially like this story and they easily will be able to see themselves following Haggis and Tank on their adventure. But all children will get a kick out of this story and will love looking at Burks’ drawings, both in color and black and white. Well done.

A great first chapter book, this is the story of two dogs, Haggis and Tank, who decide to become pirates. There are six chapters, each of which could be read separately as a story, and each one combines a traditional story format with a comic book or graphic novel style.

The story includes a number of homophones (pear and pair), as well as the important contrast between real and imaginary. There are thought-provoking questions at the end of the book, two. For example, Great Dane Hank and wee terrier Haggis both pace off twenty paces in their search for buried treasure, and they end up in different places. Readers are invited to figure out why this happens.

All in all, this is a rollicking adventure which never lets the teaching points interfere with the story.

Our family likes the Branches chapter books from Scholastic, having read several over the last year. This colorful chapter book, "All Paws on Deck," utilizes speech bubbles to tell the story of the dogs Haggis and Tank. Haggis was bored one day while Tank was enjoying a book about pirates, so the the two of them decided to play pirates themselves. They learn to speak pirate, complete with pirate names, tie knots, and read a map to search for treasure. When Tank annoys Haggis by chewing on his squeak toy (just a note that my seven-year-old daughter complained there were way too many squeaks on page 48), Haggis throws it overboard, causing a sea serpent to emerge.

Despite being six chapters, it only contains 61 pages, which is about the length of a Cat In the Hat book, but I'd say overall is a quicker read. My seven-year-old read this completely on her own in about two sittings one day. This is a positive book about reading and using your imagination for adventures, as well as not judging a book by its cover. Dogs, pirates... What's not to like?
