Product Description

Certain that the trail made by a white mammoth will lead his people to a land of abundance, the young shaman Cha-kwena presses on, pursued by a race of vicious and relentless hunters intent on stealing his magic.

From the Publisher

The grassy Great Plains shake with thunder and deadly tornadoes whirl down from storm clouds as the First Americans begin the battle the will determine which peoples--the savage or the gentle--will shape the future or humankind. On one side is the young shaman Cha-kwena, who has led his tiny band along the trail made by a magnificent white mammoth, the totem he believes will lead the People to a land of safety and abundance. But they are pursued by enemies, a race of vicious and relentless hunters who want to steal Cha-kwena's magic, kill his sacred mammoth, and possess his passionate woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars One to read again and again, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This is a book that the keeps on going, You don't want to put this one down. as with all the First Americans books from William Sarabande. they keep you gluded to your seat. You never want to put the book down. You feel like you are there with them going back into time. One you don't want to miss. Read all of the books start with the first one, Beyond the Sea of Ice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Huh?, July 2, 2003
By "bunburyist" (Spokane, WA USA) - See all my reviews
It's been said of this book that it's impossible to put down - which confuses the heck out of me, because it was only willpower and a commitment to read the entire series that kept me from flinging it across the room. Sarabande's idea of drama is to kill off characters - usually the only characters that I have any interest in. Of course, there's another way for the author to include "drama" in the narrative - yes! Brutal rape scenes! William Sarabande, serial rapist of fictional teenaged girls! The sequences probably wouldn't bother me if a.) there weren't so many of them b.) their "drama" didn't rely almost entirely on shock value. It's not shock value at the tenth or eleventh rape sequence, campers, it's "oh, this again" ... and after #20, the reaction turns to disbelief - "how long do you expect me to swallow this ...?"

There was *one* sequence in this novel that disturbed me; a passage that haunted me as it was actually supposed to. In this sequence, a woman takes a knife - a ceremonial knife used for human sacrifice, no less! - and, because menopause would mean that she's not *young* anymore, stabs herself through her vagina into her uterus. This scene was powerful, I think because it was so disturbing and messed up.

But when you have to resort to scenes like this only to make a book memorable, the question I have to ask is why you're writing the dang novel in the first place.

Anyway, guidelines say I'm not supposed to be "spiteful", so I suppose I should try and control the vitriol ...
